Jailcase, what a lovely name for a nutter. Although my favourite word for a nutter is 'a nutter'. As in 'that bloke's a nutter.

Just been reading that SA link to the BBC site. Cor blimey the old boy is off again. Although I must say I've never heard his 'I have owned a few racehorses in my time' line before!

What has become of ‘Broken’ Britain, people?!? Answers on a postcard to the usual address...

Jessops, HMV and now Blockbuster whilst the ‘lucky last’ at Newbury yesterday saw the winning connections receive a prize of less than £1k. In Meydan today, by comparison, the winner of each of their 6 races will pick up at least £100k and in 2 cases over a quarter of a bally million!

It was a Hunters Chase, they don't earn that sort of prizemoney in a field in Didmarton. Do they? Horses for courses old bean, horses for courses. I think the courses, are starters and mains.

Nass, look at the prizemoney on offer in the rest of the races at Newbury yesterday. It wasn’t much more than that in any of them either! Has racehorse ownership ever looked so bleak??? There surely has to be some incentive, old boy.

Totally off topic but what do people think re Graham Lee’s chances in the Flat Jockeys Championship of 2013??? Paddy Power as short as 8/1 seemingly in the belief that he is now in pole position to pick up a lot of the rides made vacant by Hanagan and De Souza’s relatively new jobs (no one person did this last year but Graham Lee could exploit the vacuum in the North due to these 2 largely now riding in the South).

6 have just been declared to run against Sprinter Sacre on Saturday. Although given the weather forecast all NH cards must be in some doubt on that day, unfortunately.

I usually charge for this sort of service, but I'm feeling benevolent......

JAILCASE: a certainty, something utterly reliable.

UK, mainly Scottish, adaptation from the US racing term 'lock' (same meanings) derived in turn from words like 'cinch' - a buckled saddle-girth - originating in 19thC Mexico. Best guess is that the Scots didn't want a word that could be confused with 'loch' (a large unattractive stretch of water alleged to contain prehistoric creatures to attract gullible tourists).

I'm pretty sure 'lock' crops up in Damon Runyon. There's a linguists' word for the verbal process by which the association has moved through lock-in/lock-down/lock-up to the various words for prison - I think it's parallelism - but I'm in no doubt that the 'lock' origin is the right one.

Difficult day, though the Irish stuff looks watchable. Good luck all round.

Don't you just hate people who are always moaning and have that "no we can't" attitude.

seems Richard's Sundance may have actually got a bruise. NR again.

Rainer, thank you for that, so lock means a certainty? Therefore a lockkeeper is someone who keeps a certainty? Was Henry Cecil a lockkeeper?

Probably not, Nass, but while we're on the subject: does anyone share my unworthy suspicion that (just as Dancing Brave's original rating was 'a sort of retirement gift to David Swannell'), so Frankel's may be partly a nod toward Henry's courage in adversity and place in the pantheon ?

Yes, I would agree with him being put on a pedestal is partly to do with that.

A gynaecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skilful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.

When the time of the practical exam approached, the gynaecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?"

"The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."

After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the exhaust, which I've never seen done in my entire career".
