As Bill Bryson says, he loves the British for their type of humour and self-deprication as well as that of other people. He says we must never lose that.

i would say longsight doesn't understand the jewish sense of humour about themselves!

A good look into the depths of this is "an anthology of jewish humour" by isaac asimov!

It really impresses me how, with all they have been through and are still going through, they have never lost the art of seeing the funny side to anything!

how would i know it had a level of self humour?

If you'd read the book! It's not just a book of "Jewish jokes", it analyses the whole system of ignoring the bad that is happening to them!

I meant my response to redruth's comment, not the jewish sense of humour. I fully familiar with the jewish sense of humour as part of my job involves enabling access to medical services for the orthodox jewish community in manchester

1.30 in Rome is not fecking late: jesus wept.

The reverse situation would be "A bunch of people drinking but not drunk in covent garden were attacked by a bunch of twats from a london club" Would that be unwise? Would that be unsafe? Any implication that the spurs fans were somehow culpable/unwise is ludicrous.

Not the same by any stretch of the imagination is it?

I meant no offence to anyone by my comments. I was trying to turn the pathos of the situation into a sarcastic reference toward an event that was mindless. My reference to wealthy jews was in stark contrast to the insane violence that was perpetrated by the attackers but justified by their banner which made reference to them being Juden. Its alright to attack them as they must be wealthy Jews sitting in a bar at that time of night and at those prices. Much in the same way as fundamentalist Muslims justify their acts because if they did it then Allah wanted them to (example only, I'm not having a dig at Muslims just because I have Jewish blood in me).

Kemp and Supers, I'm not ignoring your plea, I'm hoping, with the better news on the badly injured guy's front, that some semblance of normality can return to the thread!

I'll keep a close eye! <ok>

No worries here Dave,

You have to be so careful what you write these days.

As always, trust your judgement.

Probably coincidental they were Jews. Those sort of people would just as likely target Galatasaray fans.Quite likely an equal opportunity far right group.

Canary Max, I'm not implying they caused this at all, but for their own safety they were extraordinarily unwise to be out drinking that late before the game the next day.

I know that there is an element of truth in what you say, but the fact is anyone should be able to drink anywhere at whatever time they want as long as it is not breaking any local law and they are not causing or provoking trouble. The Italian thugs caused this. The Spurs fans may have been unwise, but they shouldn't have been in a situation where they had to watch their backs. They were not doing anything to provoke trouble and so should have been fine.
