I don't think that there's a perfect way of doing things, but the selection needs thought.
It can't be purely statistical, as least not easily so and with common stats.
You need to look at what's needed beyond pure results and trophy success.

What's right for Real Madrid might not be right for Ajax, for example.
Some clubs have resources or traditions that others don't.
Simeone's football would be despised at Barca, for example.
Having the backing of the fans can affect results directly, in my opinion.

A 9 month caretaker which led to us being in a relegation battle until early Feb and resulted in one of the most humiliating FA Cup results of all time seems like a huge cock up to me

The fact we had 4 points from our first six games, all of which were under Hoddle's tenure, played a large part in our slow start - although the 3 from 5 games in December sure as hell didn't help

But the fact remains hiring a fulltime coach months before a DoF arrives would be the dumbest move we could've made

I wonder if anyone outside of r/coys is going to suggest Arne Slot?

...yes, that is a real name, he's Feyenoord's coach

If I were the DoF I would appoint Ryan Mason. Knows the ethos of the club properly, and seems a sensible guy. Has seen Mourinho and Conte close up and can learn from them. Passes my test of 'will probably do no harm', will be cheap and might just turn into our best manager ever.

Thank god you’re not the DoF.

Mason as next permanent manager would be a disaster and would show real lack of ambition.

I am sure that people said the same when Derby appointed Brian Clough or Liverpool Bill Shankly or Spurs Bill Nicholson.

Mason isn’t ready to manage Spurs yet.

Yes, he’s a Spurs man (irrelevant to managerial skill) and very likeable and sensible as you say. But if he was made the next manager it would kill his managerial career before it started.

The Spurs job is far too big to be given to a novice as there is so many issues to be solved.

Actually Matt Busby is an even better example of a nobody making a huge difference in his first management job.
We've tried giving it to two of the most experienced and successful managers in world football and that isn't working according to most on here.

So you'll be signing a nice long contract then, Antonio? Thought not.
The players, the club and now the fans. Is there anyone else that he can divert the blame on?

I think we’ve shown enough patience having to put up with his same old tactic every single week that we clearly don’t have the players for.

His inflexibility and bizarre selection decisions, his contradictory comments about wanting to win trophies while resting our best players for the one competition we may have had a chance in are why he is rightly being booed.

He doesn’t want to be here and has never shown patience at any club, demanding the world immediately, winning a quick title at the richest teams in the league then moving on after falling out with everyone.

Anything other than a win today and surely even he must realise to just cut ties now and we can get a new man in now or get planning for someone that will be joining at the end of the season.

Me, for calling out Lineker as a gobsh*te
(Gawees' fee-fees are so hurt that he causes Spurs on-pitch slumps) ??

Far-fetched I will concede, but IMHO just as valid as blaming Spurs supporters.

St Nicholson was a player under the reign of Arthur Rowe
(whose 1950-51 side AFAIK was revolutionary in
the UK for use of the "push and run" regime) .

Not really seeing such analogues for Mason.

And how does that compare to all Spurs managers in the ENIC era
(in fact, data science demands you provide the GF/GA
stats for all such managers) ??

Ex player who had been in the coaching team for a few years before being made manager with no other experience of managerial duties.
