    I used to get bottles of perfectly lovely D.O.C Chianti for €2.50 from LIDL in Malta, and that was with tax added on. They sell it young, but if you have the patience to leave it for about a year it becomes really nice. The same Chianti goes for about £7 quid in the UK with our taxes - when you compare and see new world wine going for 6 quid, you know by the time they have paid for shipping it to you that their margins are either tiny, or the ingredients are gash.

    So aye, I like cheap European wine vs new world. And I've not drunk enough expensive new world wine to compare.

    I'm drinking "Matua", a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand available for £6.49 in Morrisons. I like it very much.

    If you want to try it make sure the label says 2013 as there are also 2012 on the shelves and they are past their best, I know this having bought one of each last weekend without noticing until I opened them.

    Aren't wines supposed to improve with age ?

    Some are, some aren't, no idea, maybe just reds?

    The reason I mentioned what I'm specifically drinking is that if anyone wants to tell me it's piss, they know exactly where to get a bottle to try it.

    Anyone want to recommend something they've had at a reasonable price? I'll give it a go.

    Not all wines improve by age.

    Most wines, including cheapo crap, will begin improvement upon being opened. Most wines, including cheapo crap, will degenerate after a day or two of being opened.

    An easy way to look for wines is to look for the supermarket deals where the price is down.

    Was that a really good wine at half the price or was it some high priced ****e they couldn't get rid of?

    I dunno.

    It's a lovely drinking mystery.

    What you on tonight?

    BTW I have a couple of beers too to quench my thirst and Bombardier 500ml cans are on offer at 4 for £3.50 again in Morrisons.

    It tastes very good - it's maybe my 7th brew now so I'm starting to know what I am doing.

    Here's some 15% red grape and apple rose I brewed for the missus which she's drinking right now, at about 50p a bottle;

    And I just recently came into about 10kg of free bananas from the local banana mafia, which I'm just letting ripen a bit more (need to be almost black) before I produce some banana wine;

    Me ma used to make wine from all-sorts, sometimes for free from stuff you'd find growing wild: elder flower, elder berries, blackberries, rosehips, crab apples. Also stuff grown in the garden, if you want something strong, her parsnip wine tasted like vodka. Making drink - it's all good fun.

    Well if the wine is still on the supermarket shelf that would suggest that it hasn't been opened . So how could anybody declare that an unopened bottle of wine is "past it's best" ?

    Surely if it's ****e wine it was ****e when it when the bottle and it's it's not likely to deteriorate over time ?

    I only ask because I'm am not a wine drinker or an expert like you seem to be .:emoticon-0118-yawn:

    Ask an expert.

    I've been drinking red wine for over twenty years and I know or care about it as much as when I started.

    It tastes nice.
