It was his first managerial position, he was 34 years old and he had to combine management with playing. He also faced the pressure of managing his mates. He had to get the players to changed their atitude from calling him ''Kenny'' to ''Boss''. He also had to make a few enemies with those that didn't conform ie Phil Neal got booted out in 1985 for not conforming. They were close friends at the time.
Supposing if Ryan Giggs quit playing and took the Man United hotseat following Fergusons retirement, and won the league and cup double and whilst still playing, I would consider it a success. So winning the double as player/manager is a big achievement, and seeing as Kenny is the only one to do it is even more of an achievement. Gianluca Vialli as player manager of Chelsea didn't, neither did Ruud Gullit at Chelsea when he was player/manager.

Didn't Newcastle get their highest ever finish while he was manager?

Going back to the OP - I think the best thing is the amount we have achieved in such a short space of time. From when the owners first took over, they gave Hodgson and his awful brand of football a chance and it failed.

They then quickly made a great decision which was to appoint Kenny as manager. It was a smart decision because if there was one man that could unite the club (regardless of how results turned out) it was Kenny.

Our style of football has changed, we've brought in good players who WANT to play for the club, club is acting more professionally (no more dirty laundry out in the open) and most importantly - we're getting results.

Hopefully we can continue to progress because the foundations have been laid.

Thats what I was getting at before Contscrepe butted in and piped up with his ''But look what he did at Newcastle''. According to contscrepe winning the double as player manager is not a major achievement. This may have something to do with the fact that nobody connected to Manchester United has ever done it.
Thats the only thing I can think of.
