Tis nice round there, had some good times walking round them there woods (and hills). Thor's Cave and Eyam spring to mind as being especially nice (been a few years since i've been). Should be great fun! :)

I tend to stay away from general chat, only went over for the first Newcastle fans debate <laugh>

It shouldn't do. It's predicted to rain tomorrow mid-day, but after that it's clean sailing (hopefully)

I love Thor's Cave. It's such a nice spot. Not too fussed on Eyam though. I had to go back when I was a wee rebel at primary school and I think the fact I went there thinking I wouldn't like it made me not like it

Hmm ... say no more! Well good luck with that fella. Sure you'll get the girl, you've got the charisma she won't be able to resist for long! <ok> :)

Yeah I should stay away but its been slow on here tonight and I sort of wandered. Its only Toby and Raaaul at the moment though. I could have a frontal lobotomy and still have more than enought left over to cope with those cretins so no worries! :)

Yeah Thor's Cave and surrounding countryside is really nice. I like Eyam, lovely looking village and found the plague history really interesting. Maybe you should try it again, you might appreciate it more now? :)

Used to go out with a Uttoxeter lass and spent many holidays there. Peak District was a regular port of call. Miss it actually been too long since I last went there.

    I'm confident in my chances!

<laugh> well as long as you're entertained, I bet they no doubt think they are winning when in reality they are making fools of themselves?

Haha ... I'm biased obviously but I think you have just about nailed it with that guess. Actually Raaaul seems to have given up already so it is just Toby now. :)

I find the history really interesting. I remember we visited someone's house and in the backyard was 6 graves - still clearly intact - from where a wife had had to bury her mother, husband, son and three daughters that all caught the plague. I remember thinking how horrible it would've been. But I'm sure she'd be happy in the knowledge that her case interested me 700 years later though... maybe not

Yeah I remember that house. Along with the little plaques they put on almost all the houses listing the people who had lived there that had died from it.

Part of the appeal for me though was just the look of the buildings, the stone, architecture etc ... quite different from what I see at home so it probably has a more striking appeal to me than you as you have probably seen a fair few villages that look similar, or better.

Ah I remember visiting Eyam as a kid and loved it, seem to remember the village stocks were still intact and out on a small square somewhere too. Nice place.

Yeah! And there was a meeting stone somewhere outside the village were people from the neighbouring villages used to leave food for them so that the Eyam villagers could effectively quarantine themselves. Remember that was quite interesting too.

I read that as mormons and I was just looking at it for near enough a full minute thinking WTF is he on about?! <laugh>

Probably the reason. The town itself just seems dull to me.

Another thing I remember is how they used to get stuff from other towns. They used to put money in vinegar and then someone from wherever would take it and give them bread or whatever. Can't imagine that honesty happening today...

They also told us a story of a young couple that were madly in love and the girl was left on the inside, and she used to stand at the top of this hill and they used to wave to each other every day for moths or even years, until she didn't come back. Apparently, the guy kept coming for ages after that and ended up getting it himself. Not sure if that's true or just an old wive's tale.

It's pretty amazing how much you remember about these things really. Considering this was learnt in a four hour period of my life, 9 years ago, I'm pretty impressed by myself!

On another note, this is my first ever triple-reply post <woooo>

Haha, that's one sponge like memory you have there, I can barely remember anything beyond the nice old houses and the stocks! I do remember it made me want to learn more about the plague though.

Now you are just showing off! :)

Actually that sort of thing still goes on where I live. People sell stuff on the hedgerows (fruit, vegetables, flowers, second hand books etc) and leave a tin for the money. They trust the buyer to only take what they have paid for and to leave the money. Still works mostly. Occasional thefts but most of the time people are honest.

    Posh twat! ;)

They did a study once where a guy selling bagels did that. He did it in large companies and small companies and recommended they pay 'x' amount. In the large companies, on average they gave less money than he said they should, and in small companies they gave more. Pretty obviously what they concluded was that there was more pressure on someone in a smaller company, because there were fewer people so there were fewer people that could give less. But in the big companies nobody would know who hadn't paid up. A bit like farting in a lift, compared to farting in a busy market

Makes sense I suppose. Most of the workplaces experience the same. There is a company over here that does something similar with snacks. They deliver a tray to an office, garage etc containing a selection of chocolate bars, crisps, bags of peanuts etc and everything costs the same (e.g. 50p). The workers are trusted to leave the cash and then the company re-stocks every day and takes the money.

Apparently there is usually a discrepancy. The company I work for pays the difference but once had to send round an email stating that the shortfall was getting worryingly high and that if people weren't honest they would stop allowing the service. I guess some people just aren't honest and there is nothing you can do.
