It is a wonderful place for about 4 days in the year. Most of the time it is like this: please log in to view this image But it does magic your car uphill my voice is all high because that was a couple of years ago when I was a woman.
That photo of the gap, that's the Donegal i remember. It is an incredible county, especially when you can see more than a few feet in front of you.
Looks beautiful but I've never been. I've had a few pints bought for me by Irishmen on holiday when I've told them I'm related to Jackie Charlton
Last time i was over there was 97, going up the pass, that pic could have been taken by me the weather was so similar, although if i remember rightly it was proper pishing down that day.
What's with the roadside shrine? I'm going to cool myself down in true British Empire style: a hot curry and plenty of alcohol.
There are random shrines all round Ireland. This one has more of a specific root in Christianity taking a piggy back on local beliefs and customs from the druidic era. St Eigne apparently had a dream about the message of Jesus and told it to everyone in the area even before missionaries got there. The well there had (apparently)healing properties to the druids, so the Christians dedicated it to Eigne and pretty much nabbed it. then fired in a statue to Mary and you have folk gathering every year to say their prayers.
Saw an Arthur C Clarke programme which featured a shrine in Ireland, the figure of Mary is said to move about. He put it down to a trick of the light and religious fervour. We should send Ackworth in to investigate.
Ballinspittle?? I remember the sheer madness and fervour that swept the country at the time. I was a child but still bemused at seemingly intelligent people going ****in' mental. I guess that is how the atheists feel about people of faith all the time.
That's the one, this is the A.C.C. programme according to my nomenclature: Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious Universe S01E22 Meeting Mary Visions Of The Virgin.avi Total nonsense but then I can't talk as I saw the ghost of my recently deceased gran when I was a child.
I once had a friend stare me in the face and swear to me that the Virgin Mary appeared to him the previous evening - not even joking. It was one of those Hitler's ghost in the bath moments. P.S. Rebel you know of the person I'm talking about.
