Yes - quite a turn around by Japan . Helped maybe by VAR but still great effort . Germany ought to be well ahead .
I didn’t realise Souness was a passionate Germany fan . You’d think he had a bet on them or had a sweepstake getting them . I mean it actually looks like the ball was just on going by some pictures.
The tennis technology would show the ball to be in by a whisker whereas the disallowed goal for Lampard against Germany was a yard over the line from every angle KARMA
Down to VAR in the sense that the assistant probably didn't make a decision as they've been instructed and VAR couldn't prove his non decision wrong.
I think he did as they disallowed the goal and VAR overturned/ruled the on pitch officials hence the surprise at first as the original TV replay showed it well out but others proved otherwise. It’s on the Sunday anyway just in case England played although as it is any potential quarter final would be a 7pm kick off on the Saturday.
If Senegal beat England they will play the quarterfinal match on Friday 9th. That would count Sarr out of the Hull game on 11th, which would be a disadvantage to us. I'm assuming the Hull game is on TV.
I don't recall the assistant putting his flag up. Referee was not in a credible place to make decision. I think that they asked for a check but on the pictures available to VAR as opposed to the pictures available to the broadcasters there was no conclusive evidence that the assistant had made a mistake. Have to trust the judgement of the officials in play fir the most part. I think the decision to let the goal stand was correct.
Well it certainly looks contentious - as does the headline claiming that it sent Germany crashing out, which was entirely down to their inept performances in the two previous games. Basing my opinion on what I'd think if this decision went against us at Kenilworth Rd, I'd be rightly aggrieved - if it went our way, I'd be over the moon. It's possibly more a case of the rule regarding whether a ball is in or out needs clarifying - eg, to be in it must be actually touching the line? On that, I did notice that earlier the game when the Germans were awarded a corner, their player did the usual thing and placed the ball so that the merest fraction of it was hovering over the line. The lino checked it was positioned ok then looked away - as she looked away, the player moved it forward an inch or so before taking the kick. What he hoped to gain, I've no idea - but the goal incident strikes me as being karma...
I think there's an assumption there that the FA would sanction the postponement due to the absence of one player - which I doubt they would do. The suits are more likely to tell us to suck it up. Annoyingly, there's also the thought that Senegal could go further, and we'd be without Sarr for the Huddersfield match as well. I'd certainly be miffed if he had to stay there for the entirely pointless third/fourth place play off game and missed two fixtures.
According to the picture the ball is still in play - if any part of the ball ie. the curve is over any part of the line then it's still in play, at least that's how I understand it.
This is where the interpretation comes in BB. There has to be clear space between the curve of the ball and all parts of the line in order for the ball to be out of play. This came up in a game between Ajax and PSV last year and was subsequently explained by the referee.
No - just moved incase England played . The winner of that tie will play France or Poland at 7pm on Saturday 10th according to the schedule. Oh maybe - I thought the goal was originally ruled out but guess not.
And that's the problem - interpretation. The rule should be rewritten so there is no possibility of it being misunderstood - and it's clear to everyone, without the need for technology. The technology is there to help, not confuse.
The goal was given on the pitch. There was no clear evidence for VAR to overrule. Goal stood. There are photos now from over the top of the ball and almost straight and by 1.88mm the ball was in play. If that had been between the posts and a goal line clearance happened it would have been ruled no goal as it wasn't completely over the line. We had the Pussetto v Spurs and the Liverpool v City , both were very close decisions. It was in play and the right decision made, all the better that it affected the Germans!
