It's one of those hypocritical things though isn't it. We're told that one day off school just before the summer holidays means your child will definitely become a serial killer yet when there's a dusting of snow it doesn't matter, it's only a day of school after all. I think people also find it hard to understand why it's a problem now but wasn't a problem years ago. Even when our generation were kids which isn't all that long ago there was no cancelling school when it snowed, and it's not like everyone was coming home with broken legs is it? It's fixing a problem which never existed. Likewise with the holidays in summer thing.
When my kids were at school, they never closed it due to the weather and most of the kids that went there lived in the middle of nowhere. Though to be fair, half of them owned a tractor.
I attended a council estate primary, junior and senior in the 80s and we were off loads due to the snow: either teachers couldn't get in or the boilers broke. It seemed to snow every year back then too. Nowadays, it's more for H&S reasons so I'd look at the long and winding vines of society rather than just blame schools.
It’s probably because people give more of a **** about health and safety. Taking a day off because of a holiday isn’t on, taking a day because you physically can’t get into school because of the weather is different.
About spot on here. I ain' seen any snow on the ground here for 5 years so spending money in lots of snow stuff would be nuts. And the big problems a lot of the times us people thinking they can drive like it' not snowed at all
They don't care about health and safety in Scandinavia, the Alps regions, Bavaria etc? Or do all the pupils and teachers live witin 50 yards of the schools?
You can't compare the UK to countries well equipped to handle this weather. We'd struggle with scorching heat too.
Another one who bleats about our capability to deal with rare weather events with a short term impact but who would howl with outage if council tax was raised to cover this minor inconvenience “just in case”. Honestly who the **** would compare the UK to Scandavania and the Alps for dealing with snow?
I drove back from Hull yesterday in five hours driving time (it normally takes me 4 hours 15 mins), biggest problem was trucks clogging up the services. I spent 40 minutes at trying to get on the M40, because selfish twats blocked the roundabout at the services. I drove right through without any problems, the traction control light came on once whilst I was in lane 3 of the M1, the lanes had been gritted but not enough had ventured out into the lane. Perhaps some of those that I drove past may have considered my driving to be to fast, but at no time was I uncomfortable with my speed. I could see well ahead, I never felt any loss of grip (other than above) and the temperature was only below freezing for about ten miles near Derby. I delayed setting off by 30 minutes and I kept on motorways and dual carriageways. I did see two BMWs struggling for grip (I wondered if they should have had winter tyres fitted). My missus is not a good passenger in poor conditions, but even she said that she did not know what all the fuss was about. We have driven up in -8 before without problems.
Not about the ability to cope. Is about a smattering of snow somehow more dangerous to life and limb than deep snow and colder weather.
Since the majority of Beemers are rear wheel drive they tend to be a bit squirrely on snowy/slushy roads, I used to own a C Class Merc and it was the same. I didn't fancy shelling out for winter tyres for a 'week per year' use so instead I would load the boot with my trolley jack and heavy tool box ...... job sorted.
If it snows all the time, it's worth you buying a set of tyre chains and a snowmobile, if it snows once in a blue moon, it's not worth buying either, that's the difference.
