I went a couple of years ago, being Catholic it really was amazing seeing where the bones of St. Peter are. It's a beautiful place even if you're not religious, I would recommend it if you have any interest at all in history or art. They're not hiding anything, most of the books they keep are ridiculously old and it would take weeks to go through the whole archives.

I think it is a bit suspect to be fair, to me it all seems dodgy as **** especially with the mafia links...it is 'interesting' though, my friend (a roman) was telling me just how corrupt Rome/Italy is, he says having the Catholic church based in Rome is a disaster for Roman citizens and the worst thing they could have.
Did you go to the Cupola?
I didn't go up it, but I went in the cathedral, crypt and museum (not the whole thing obviously, I was only there for a day!). What mafia links are you talking about? although it's in the centre of Rome it's technically a different country, it's like saying that something based in Geneva is French (well not completely, but you know what I mean). I think Romans like it if they're actually Catholic, but I can see how having something like the Catholic Church based in your back garden can be annoying with regards to the thousands of tourists.
