Wasn't VAR who sent Son off. Atkinson made the decision.
Not wishing to stick up for var but I think Atkinson made the decision.
I think he saw the state of Gomes leg and jumped to conclusions (rightly or wrongly).
He changed his mind far too quickly for VAR to have been involved 
Been reading comments on Twitter and some believe that a red card has to be reviewed by var to confirm, can you clear this up for me please Tom
They did look at it, and agreed with the ref......or at least didn't disagree?

Under the previous guidelines they would just check if the ref had missed anything. Ie revoking a red card when there was no contact, or giving one where there contact that was missed. It wouldn't re ref a decision at all. Which, again I agree with. As I said before, lowering the threshold to allow subjective decisions opens the door to lots of controversial decisions that take too long to come to.
There was clearly contact. I doubt the ref missed anything so it certainly wouldn't have been overturned.

Totally understand what you are saying, but, MA did first reach for a yellow, before changing his mind to a red, then subsequently sending the lad off. And now a few days later we have the red card rescinded. Due to the horrific nature of the injury they was a break in play, var could have slipped in unnoticed and got this right.....after all it checks every red card anyway. Watch Son's tackle again, and ask yourself was it a sending off. No matter the emotion of the situation, he should have got this right.

I think that the red card was warranted. The attempted tackle wasn't overly aggressive or out of control, However Son had absolutely zero chance of winning the ball and looking at the angle of his tackle i'm not sure he was even trying to. If you attempt a tackle that you have zero chance of winning and the result is a potential career ending injury then I see no problem with it being a red card.
