A few of my mates go to Hull. It's a decent uni, but the nightlife isn't up to much. Many students that move to Hull don't really like it and find there isn't too much to do. It depends where you're from, if you're from a big city, you might find it boring.

Most people I've spoken to who've been to Hull uni but who aren't from round the area seemed to enjoy it. Though obviously not may have stayed as there just aren't any jobs in Hull.

My mates from Hull who went to uni didn't seem to enjoy it though, but that's probably because they realised they should have got some balls and moved away for it.

I always thought the nightlife was a bit **** in hull, but that's probably because you get used to it. To be honest it's probably pretty good given the amount of diversity in the pubs/clubs as long as you look around.

They could get you a crane!

As someone who finally submitted my PhD thesis last friday, I don't see any Asian students in South Kensington. <whistle>

Check out Leeds University Business School. I believe it's ranked in the top 10-12 in the UK. One of the best Sports Management programs (world-wide) around.
On top of that, the Student Union is one of the best (world-wide again) for attracting top music performers to their Sat night "hops". Plus progressive in getting up & coming future stars. In my day, a very vibrant student life can be had there - I'm sure it hasn't diminished in that regard.
Forget the football there, but it's a cheap train ride to Hull for the City games at the weekend - one hour away. Even away games in the other direction readily accessible.
    Good luck.

Interesting. If Cheshire Ben is correct & you're at Imperial, I'm surprised there are few Asian students there with the fame of Imperial's Engineering prowess, particularly Earth Sciences (Geology, Mining etc). Good luck with the external examiners, whatever the subject matter.

It's heavily asian (some of those I've taught, I'm staggered at how they got in). Money talks and it's all coming from the east (we had the South Korean president visit last week). Outgoing from my office in the last couple of months: me, 2 Greeks, 2 English and a German being replaced by 3 Chinese, 1 Irish and 1 Spanish.

The most obvious change in recent times is less people from Hong Kong and Singapore, and more people from mainland China.

not totally relevant my lad did his first year at York and stayed at campus and had he the ability to clean n tidy himself, it would have been very nice .
this year he is in a shared house and even tho he share with a few lasses (lucky twat) the whole place is a dive - i didnt see it in its day once guise though .

As for Hull ive worked at quite a few when me dad fitted them out for local landlords - everyone was grim , but 99% of it was down to the people in them ,
I have seen some weird **** in peoples kitchen sinks !!!

I'm in my final year of a business course at Hull. The business school is an impressive building and also the library is undergoing a huge redevelopment. For a business degree you probably won't find a much better uni, taking into account the low living costs. I stayed at home but know the usual thing to do is stay in the lawns for your first year and then get a house in the avenues/Bev road area for the other years.

Also if you end up going do a 4 year course and do a placement year- works out much better and improves job prospects.

Any chance of explaining this in terms a simple souls like me can understand? I thought the Jockanese system was free, so I can't quite grasp the repayment/debt thing. :emoticon-0120-doh:

I completed a Bsc and then an MSc in Earth Sciences without a single Asian person on either course, since I've started my PhD there's 3 Asian's in my office alone, not sure how that works!

Studied sport management in 2007-10 but that was up at the Scarborough campus. The hull student area is much much better on the social side of life!

You also get student "loans" to cover living costs. If you're an English resident at an English uni then when you graduate your "repayments" are 9% of everything over £21,000 (plus increases based on inflation since it was announced that I'm ignoring for illustration). If you're a Scottish resident at a Scottish uni then your "repayments" are 9% of everything over £15,000 (plus the same % increases as the £21k figure). Previous English graduates, and anybody who started their course before the £9k fees became an option but hasn't graduated yet will "repay" at 9% over £15k (plus inflation)

That means if next summer me and someone from Hull uni both get a job working for the same company on the same £21k a year we'll both pay the same income tax, and the same National Insurance, but I'll have an extra £540 a year taken in "loan" "repayments" because I'll be earning £6k over my threshold and they won't be paying anything.

In terms of graduating and going out in life, I'd rather the student "loan" was £27k higher and I had more money in my back pocket each month. It makes it easier to pay mortgages and things like that, and the size of your student "debt" isn't available to banks etc, so it has no affect on your ability to borrow, you actually have a greater ability to borrow under the English system because of that extra £45/month in your take home pay. The lower disposable income is much more of a handicap in life than any so called "debt".

The reason for all the " marks is because the system in no way acts like a loan so I don't like talking about it as one. It doesn't appear on your credit files, it doesn't have to be repaid at a set time or rate, if you get to 25 or 30 years without getting your balance to zero then they just wipe it for you. It's clearly just an additional form of income tax that you agree to pay if you take government help whilst studying, that you only have to pay for so long after graduation, and that if you reach the point where you've paid back the equivalent of what you were given you get to stop paying early.

It's one of the things that pisses me off about the press in this country. When they increased the maximum fees from £3k to £9k they jumped on that point, completely ignoring the fact it would be a benefit to the poor and would only adversely affect the richest people after uni. (To repay the old loans you needed to earn equivalent £35k pa straight from uni for the whole time, that went up to £41k with the threshold increase, but then you'd be £540 a year better off anyway, so it's an even higher figure to be worse off now). They also ignored that the interest rate switched from being the lower of the rate of inflation or the average of the 10 biggest banks SVRs (I think it was their SVRs, it was definitely a really low rate as that's what we've been on for years now thanks to the 0.5 BoE base rate). Again, that's something that only affects the richest after uni, as if you wouldn't pay off the increased size of loan on the old system then the interest means nothing.

Cheers Ricardo, I appreciate you taking the effort. That makes sense now.

It's interesting how often the best deals aren't intuitively the obvious ones.

x2. The whole 'loans' thing needs to be re-branded so that it doesn't put people off. It's not so much a loan as a graduate tax.
