A derby is two teams from the same city. Its not a proper derby, obviously it looks like a derby and its as fierce as one. Its just my opinion, but i think sunderland make it a derby because they are so desperate. Would just be another 3 points to me.

Im not denying its a big game. I was desperate to get a ticket and ill be there on saturday. Im just making the point the reason its percieved as a derby is because (in my opinion) the way sunderland fans go on and therefore newcastle fans react.

I think it is unique in terms of local rivalries because of the fact that the two cities are separate. In a normal derby (Liverpool/Everton, Arsenal/Spurs etc etc) 100 yards away from the ground can be classed as neutral territory, but in our case, as an away team or fan you enter an entire city which is territory of the other team. It feels more exciting to enter the enemies territory.

I just hope Sami and Shola aren't up front together!

If we can keep the Nigerian Pele quiet then in the words of Steve Bruce, we'll do ok.

Its a massive game for both sets of supporters to me. Its a derby too, none of this "proper" derby tripe. I look for the games first as soon as the fixtures are released. I kinda of know where you're coming from in terms of how Sunderland fans treat it. All my mackem mates would openly admit that they have often felt a bit more lively about it compared to Newcastle fans. They feel up until recently they'd had to deal with a lot of mickey taking from our side as they yo yo'd between divisions and the low points seasons etc. I think that will slowly change now they've began to establish themselves.

Massive game for both sets of supporters and I couldn't give a **** whether we're in one city, its a big derby for our clubs.

Yeah i think your probably right. It is a massive game but i think its a massive game because of how it comes across from sunderland fans.

Tbh im dreading the match. It will be the most nervous 90 mins, and i think they will sneak it.But last year they got a draw and they were so uncontrollable and it was like get a grip.

Fair enough 5-1 but 1-1 at home?

Disagree with Ulgham, it is a proper derby and in my opinion up there with Rangers/Celtic as the best derby, you say Sunderland only make it a derby because they are so obsessed with bettering us? Most Newcastle fans are just the same, theres a deep rivalry that goes way back beyond recent times and its certainly not all about the Sunderland fans inferiority complex, although I do admit they seem to talk a lot more about us than we talk about them on the whole. But really we're both as obsessed as the other, which I think its good because it makes the derby all the better.

If you look at all the views in an objective manner rather than ridiculous stance you seem to be trying to defend, you would surely realise that it means just as much to both sets of fans...
This "derby" is in my opinion more highly contested than any of the single city derbies in England, simply because of the unique geography of the area. We both live in cities with approximate populations of around 280,000 or so, with another 600,000 living in smaller towns in the immediate Tyne and Wear area where loyalties are very much split between the two clubs...We then have the wider North East area with loyalties split between the two on the grounds of family etc...
To cut a long story short, this is a regional derby rather than a city derby which has profound effects which go way beyond football...

Any update on Gyan, was he taking off as a precaution or is he a genuine doubt for Saturday?

  19. How did Gardner play for you lads against Liverpool then? Sessegnon didn't look all that good to me, Larsson looked good though.

I thought Sessegnon had a decent game, some nice touches but he looks very wasteful in the final third.
