A couple of mentions of Beresford are a surprise. I remember him being fairly decent. Certainly better going forward than defending but that was Keegan's style of play so he fit the team well.

That's just....weird that Beresford is mentioned at all in this thread.

He was outstanding in the 93 promotion season, and good enough in the Prem to get on the verge of an England call up, he trailed off a bit at the end, but he was never poor, and easily one of the best full backs of the last 30 years.

Paul Daglish and Doumbia surely worth a mention!

Doumbia was probably rubbish, but considering how little he was played, you can't really judge. I remember him having a shot when he came on as a sub in one game so.you've gotta give him credit for that, good effort for a 65 year old!

I can remember going into Newcastle with my Dad when they came back after losing - he said to me "you better get used to this"...

I remember crying my eyes out when we got beat and my mum couldn't understand why I was so upset, telling me that it was just a game. Then a few days later she took us to St James' Park to welcome the team back home and I cried my eyes out again. She still didn't understand. Turned out when my dad had told me he was going to the cup final I thought it meant he was part of the team. I was upset cos he wasn't there on the pitch and thought he hadn't come home. Apparently he'd been home since the Saturday night, but was working shifts and I just hadn't seen him <laugh>

Oh, the good old days when life was simple. Although in your house it seems life wasn't the only simple one!!!

Lol he was crap mate!

Steven Taylor was actually called up

Beresford? ****ing hell he does not even come close. Was fantastic for us in the division 1, and pretty good in the PL until we dumped Ginola in front of him. Then he was kinda overloaded <laugh> It was worth it though because David was ridiculously good.

I never rated beresford because he couldn't defend basically but I'm sure we've had worse

Beresford was brilliant in the 92-93 season, had got lots of interest from top league teams, but we managed to snap him up, and he was widely regarded as our player of the year that season. And he was awesome in the Prem to start with when we had Barton as the other FB. Things only started to fall away a bit in 96-97, and after that they completely fell away when Dalgleish came in and didn't know how to use him. He was anything but crap, he was a great player for his time, and made a massive difference to the team, seeing as we had crap like Mark Stimson playing before him.

And Beresford did get a call up, in 93 was called into the squad but never actually played for the full team, did play for England B though.
