Well done The Times pity the BBC show utter disinterest in the whole competition.

Sad isn;t it - what's sadder (to me) is that, until we got relegated to the third division, I had little time for it and always had the matches on as "noise" in the background. I will, from now on, be watching no matter what division we are in. Think this season has given me a new found respect for the lower leagues.

Could the BBC's lack of reporting on the game be down to the fact that they didn't have the rights to broadcast it?
It was certainly covered on the BBC Football website. In the grand scheme of things it's not a major game so it was never going to get top billing on any of their news programmes, other than the regional news programmes.

Tin pot trophy or not it was a final held at our national stadium with a record crowd involving two of the top four teams in League 1.
They're coverage was minimal at most and utterly pathetic imo.
I know the match was covered by their rivals Sky but the BBC champion themselves as the media for the nation who don't or cannot afford subscription TV and in this they have failed miserably.
It's got nowt to do with the fact it was us playing and we get ignored again but it's this attitude as a broadcaster that results in them falling short in their duties as a free for all broadcaster.

I think it's a bit harsh on the BBC here. I couldn't really be arsed to watch it as I had something more important going on but I kept clicking on the BBC for my updates. They were praising our fans as much as The Times were in the OP. They had multiple pictures of our fans in London the night before the game and again on the day. You are completely wrong in your opinions that they didn't cover the game.

I don't think it's a tin pot trophy at all. I think it should be given high billing. The BBC website had live updates of the game, a match report after the game, and they used it as the basis for an article on the best-attended games in Europe this weekend gone. Due to the nature of the BBC they can't compete against subscription services for the rights to broadcast games live or even to broadcast the highlights. It's frustrating that more sporting events aren't on free channels, I agree, but unfortunately that's just the way things are. I don't see how the BBC can do anything about that without upping the licence fee.
Apart from Sunderland and Portsmouth fans (not all of them either), and the owners of business's around London, nobody was bothered.

Just to say I've never considered it a tin pot trophy but fell into the trap of quoting others on here.
Had I thought that I wouldn't have gone to games at Morecambe and Wembley and miss what was a great occasion at the final despite the result.
I do still standby my criticism of the BBC.

. I agree that occasions like Sunday should be broadcast more widely and available to all. I'm just not sure what the BBC are supposed to do when Sky have paid for the legal rights to broadcast the competition.
Sorry guys but it is a tin pot trophy, which only goes to speak volumes for the level of support that went down. Looked like a cracking atmosphere. I have family down in London and they commented on the Sunderland fans and their excellent support and comradery throughout the weekend. Well played lads
Did you notice last Saturday there was no final score ! no prem teams playing that's why and oh the BBC don't show England matches either do they, they paid £50m for Wimbledon rights though and lost the f1 to sky. missed my pools results as well.
