    Kuyt
    Pieters
    Mariappa

Though these would be dead certs, for much the same reasons. :/

Was shown around the ground and fee was agreed. Spurs gazumped us on wages.

Terry was very close from all accounts, was on the fringes of the Chelsea team and roomed with 2 geordies as a youth player.

We were never really going to sign Rooney, apparently the whole 'deal' was just done to annoy Man United and make them buy him a season before they wanted to, for more money than they were willing to pay, he would never have signed for us is the rumour.

What would have been the point though? All that time and effort spent with negotiations and bids just to annoy a club who weren't even a rival in the league table? Doesn't make much sense...

To be fair to Sir Bobby Viana was hot property. I remember watching him in the u21 championship (a certain Petr Cech was awesome for Czechs) and he was named player of the tournament. He was fantastic, I thought they were joking when they said we were signing. Supposedly only Sir Bobs Sporting link edged him away from Juve. Then he looked good when he first came but could never dislodge Robert or Speedo and it went south from there.

Back on the up for Braga these days after some years in the wilderness at Valencia.

One judges as one see's and he just didn't seem to have the heart for it at the time.

Pistone wasn't supposed to have much heart either (even though one of our players gave him one), and we know what happened to him.

Thought we were going to sign Shane Long a couple of years ago.
The Modric one hurt, my mate who's a spurs fan liked to remind me of how close we came to getting him.

No doubt the physicality of the league wasn't for him. Speedo even tried to take him under his wing but he seemed to expect a starting place rather than earn it. Fact is our midfield was very talented at the time with the likes of Nobby, Speedo, Robert, Dyer, Jenas. Frightening looking back! I think if he was being bought now, the league would have suited him more as it has become more technical. That said Mr Marveaux seems to be having the exact same struggle!

Pistone definitely lacked heart and to be honest I'm not convinced his natural talent was as great as some suggested. Bought on an Inter pedigree for me. I still have nightmares about Overmars in the final!

Berbatov and Carrick are the obvious choices like others had said, but otherwise I would have to say:

Adam Johnson - When he first went to City, I predicted he'd move within a few years, and heard he was a Newcastle fan. Why we didn't fight for him this summer is beyond me!
Jermaine Defoe - Seemed to fit the clinical, zippy goal scorer mould that's been left empty for 10 years since Bellamy left. (No, HE doesn't count.)
Park Ji-Sung - For some reason, he always seemed a player who would come up here, not entirely sure why.

Shearer was Berbatov's boyhood idol. He'd have jumped at the chance in the summer. Looking with hindsight, this was a mistake regardless of age.

Many have said that Berbatov was a non starter due to the fee and wages he would command, but if Fulham could stretch to sign him, then surely we could have also.
agree with Defoe, and Johnson always thought we might see one or the other at some point.
