I think it would be one of the first thoughts in most Sunderland fans minds when the new of the imminent singing of Jermain Defoe. " What about the system?" Of course I'm referring to Gus' preferred 4-3-3 a formation built upon 2 central pillars who must get through a lot of graft. Firstly there's the DM Catts territory a central pivot to help both defence and midfield and also charged with breaking up the opposition's attacks, like I say a lot of graft. Then there's the CF a role Connor Whickam has the potential to be, playing up front on his own hassling the centre backs holding up the ball bringing others in crucially scoring goals. Jermain Defoe is not that kind of forward but he's proven class and even years to late I'm happy to have him a genuine goal scorer and while he's not rapid anymore but he's fast on the turn and over 10 yards which is more than enough when you can finish....."cough". So as you can tell I'm a fan of Defoe but I think to get the best out of him Connor or a decent target man has to play alongside him, so does this mean 3-5-2? God I hope not but is 4-4-2 outdated? I don't think so I think the players have to be give the freedom to adapt when playing with/ without the ball as in having players capable of turning a 4-4-2 into a 4-4-3 and sitting in at a moment's notice and vice versa.

I thought only Tranmere were allowed that many players on the pitch :emoticon-0140-rofl:

Seriously though... It'll be interesting to see if GP ditches his preferred formation to suit!?

We have to go 4-4-2

Against Spurs I would go with

-----------------------CP----------------
vergini-----Brown------JOS-------PVA
-----------------------catts------------------
Johnson------Larsson-----Gaicchinri
---------------Fletch-----Defoe-----------

Sorry but Vergini & Fletcher shouldn't be in the team. both are playing rubbish.

That be the team, maybe Rodwell in for little fella giacc.

Would prefer this.

It`s no good having a system if the players aren`t good enough to play it.

It`s no good having good players unless the system uses their strengths.

At present we don`t seem to be doing either.

He won't though will he. No faith he will at all.

We need to go imo
Pants
O'shea------Brown
Jones----------------------------------------PVA
Seb----Catts
AJ-----------Alvarez----------Giacc
Defoe
Cracking team that but pace needed in the summer.
but I think we'll go

Pants
O'shea-------Brown
Jones--------------------------------------PVA
Catts
Seb------Gomez
AJ/Alvarez----------------Giacc/Defoe

Fletch/Wickham
Playing Defoe upfront in our current system would be suicide, the lad would get murdered, though I've begun to think Gus is limited, i'm sure he realises this.

There's always been a system fella, just not the players to execute it. Even with Defoe we still don't.

They should try my system.

a). Get the ball.
b). Pass it to someone wearing the same colour shirt as you. These are your friends.
c). Use this method to get the ball to the other end of the pitch. Do not pass the ball to any of the chaps with different coloured shirts. These are not your friends.
d). When you get to the other end, put the ball in the net. (Any one of you, it doesn`t matter who). You can use your foot, head, knee, arse, anything except your hands.
e). Repeat from a). until the chap with the whistle (Who is nobodies friend) tells you you can have a rest.

Even our lot should be able to understand that.

Absolute Genius. Hope Fat Mike doesn't read this, he'll offer you the job on the spot. On the condition you abide by:
1. Buy random foreign players for random amounts
2. Sell one of them for four times what you paid
3. Repeat

I`d need a dof for that mate. Fancy the job?

I devised the system so that complete idiots could understand. Might still be too complicated for them up the road like. <laugh>

Personally think atm we could play 3-5-2
Whilst I admit I am not a fan of the tactic either, it could work for us...

----------------------Pantilimon------------------
--------Vergini-------Jos---------Brown-------
Jones----------------------------------------PVA
--------Larsson-----Catts----Giacc-----------
-----------------------Johnson-------------------
---------------Defoe----Fletcher----------------

Johnson/Alvarez could be swapped, same as Giacc/Rodwell to suit

However that imo could be a rather devastating team

Pva and Jones bombing forward and having the pace to get back, Johnson given a free role behind the strikers with Giacc pushing on from the midfield to assist in attacking

wouldnt say its particularly deviating from Gus' style that much AND it also means the defence is well covered...
