Same area but further east , The house on the left is still there but you probably have never seen it . The image was taken in front of where now exists a motor factor, carpet shop ( tenuous link with the Swans) and a kitchen manufacturer please log in to view this image
I was wrong - it’s not near Cwm Level, I think the horse and cart are standing on what is now the A48 Peniel Green Road, just around the corner from Tesco Llansamlet. The road to the left takes you to Birchgrove, whilst the road in the middle takes you towards Skewen and Jct 44 of the M4.
Hi Taff ,no its looking up Peniel Green road at the traffic lights at Llansamlet with your back towards Morriston, the shop on the left was a chemist but now a florist. the Star inn in the image has long gone to be replaced by a newer version which was set further back (its still there but no longer a pub) when the junction was realigned
Hi Matt - I remember my grandfather and father stopping off in The Star for a pint when I was about 8 - I had lemonade and crisps
One of the last land ladies was an ex cleaner where I worked and she took a chance on running it but the overall decline in pubs plus there being the Llansamlet social club , Pot Black , The Smiths and the Plough and Harrow all within spitting distance meant something had to give , The Star then The Pot Black were those who so far have fallen by the wayside
Stunning. And it will look even better displayed alongside a turd in a jam jar, the latest piece of amazing conceptual art
To those who maybe interested , the view is again in Llansamlet , standing in the carpark where Euro car parts , Sigma kitchens and Budget carpets ( the owner a friend of Jenkins & co ) and facing Tesco ,the railway line is now long gone Swansea to Clydach ( which disappeared in the early 70's ) The line is under Tesco's carpark and ran across the front of the terrace houses under the A48 at Penial Green ( the bridge is still there just up from the Golden Palace Chinese take away) and on to Heol Las , Glais and Clydach .
Matt - I remember meeting a lad (Lyndon?) whose family owned a few houses around there. Do you know where the Llansamlet mine was?
I have a relative who lives in the row of terrace houses to the left of the picture, there were five recorded pits in the Llansamlet area , Charles Pit was in the area behind the Plough & Harrow pub on Church road and Road and Llansamlet pits both between the traffic lights at Llansamlet and Peniel Green Road, then Trawllwn B and Park c both east of Trawllwn road around then Heol ddu pit rightwhere the M4 interchange is Birchgrove to Skewen , The new costa coffee there is build on a few air shafts which had to be "filled in" . Not forgetting Scotts pit where the pump house still exists and an old playground of mine when it was called the "Ivy House" where the dare at the time was to climb up the Ivy and stand on the large window opening.(opposite the bottom entrance to Heol Las park) We have rich industrial heritage which in the main has been lost but there still remains some should you know where to look
My great-grandfather was a part-owner (1 of 7 shareholders/owners) of the Gwern Colliery in Llansamlet - The Llansamlet Coal Company.
