Sleaford Mods show again why they are iconic, important and impossible to ignore Alex Behan05:00, Jan 31 2021 Email Comments The trick Sleaford Mods consistently pull off is making music so simple it sounds like your 10-year-old could make it, but behind crackling bedroom beats and bungling basslines is calculated genius. Vocalist Jason Williamson may sound like he’s just walked in off the street, accidentally stumbling into a studio instead of a pub, but don’t be fooled, he wants you to underestimate him. His fury hits harder when you don’t see it coming. They self-describe as “electronic munt minimalist punk-hop rants for the working class”, which sums it up nicely. Beat poetry with a side of punk. A duo, Williamson specialises in “sprechgesang” the vocal style, combining singing and speaking, while Andrew Fearn makes all the music and, during live shows, plays the chill yin to Williamson’s crazed, performative yang. please log in to view this image SUPPLIED Sleaford Mods’ unique offering is beat poetry with a side of punk. On Out There, Williamson delivers a sad, funny freewheeling dissertation on the wide-ranging negative effects of Brexit. His “Panic at the tills! Panic at the Tills!” has echoes of UK comedian Stewart Lee’s infamous “Coming Over Here” routine, they’re both paddling the same globally-inclusive waka. Shortcummings turns prominent British politician and “posh hamster” Dominic Cummings into an upper-class punching bag. Fair warning, there are rather rude ripostes on occasion. Explicit language barely begins to describe it, but Sleaford Mods are iconic, important and impossible to ignore, once they get going.
