Sunderland set to bid £15M for Fabio Borini and Ashley Williams Sunderland are set to step up their recruitment drive this week with an improved double bid for Fabio Borini and Ashley Williams. The Black Cats have already signed Costel Pantilimon, Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez. They have seen offers of £10m for Borini and £4m for Williams rejected by Liverpool and Swansea City respectively. But the Reds are close to completing a £25m swoop for Southampton’s Adam Lallana, who often plays in Borini’s favoured left-hand side attacking role. And with only a year left on his current contract, Williams has yet to accept the terms of the new deal the Swans have proposed to him. Gus Poyet was expected back at his Academy of Light desk this weekend, having completed a studio guest stint for ITV’s World Cup coverage. Fiorentina fullback Marcos Alonso looks increasingly likely to join Sunderland as West Ham United’s interest looks to have ended. The 23-year-old joined Gus Poyet’s resurgent Sunderland on loan during the New Year and it appears that a permanent move to the Stadium of Light is imminent. Shieldsgazette.com suggested last Monday that the Viola may keep hold of Alonso as they head to their pre-season training-camp, with Vincenzo Montella content to re-assess the players development as Sunderland and West Ham battled for his signature. However Mirror.co.uk are reporting that West Ham have turned their attention to Boca Juniors’ Argentinean let-back, Emanuel Insua, thus ending Fiorentina’s hopes of a mini bidding-war over Alonso. Alonso began his career within Real Madrid’s youth ranks, before spending three seasons with Bolton Wanderers. Having transferred to Fiorentina in 2013, Alonso made just nine appearances before being loaned to bottom-of-the-league Sunderland on January 1. He was a regular starter for Sunderland as they made a remarkable escape from likely-relegation and started in the League Cup Final defeat to Manchester City. With Manuel Pasqual and, occasionally, Nenad Tomovic occupying the left-back spot at Fiorentina, and West Ham’s interest appearing to have waned, the path looks clear for Sunderland to secure Alonso’s services ahead of 2014-15. A swap-deal between Fiorentina and Sunderland, also involving Modibo Diakite, had been touted but it is now thought that Sunderland could wrap up a deal for Alonso at little over €2 million. http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2014/06/fiorentina-fullback-likely-to-complete-move-to-sunderland/?
Gus Poyet returns to work this week with a move for Marcos Alonso at the top of his agenda for the first week of pre-season. The Black Cats have been locked in talks with Fiorentina over the future of left-back Alonso and have proposed a straight swap for centre-back Mo Diakite, who is unwanted on Wearside. However, the Italian side want Sunderland to throw in £2million to complete the deal and are aware there is other interest in the full-back. Despite talk of West Ham being keen on Alonso, his preference is to return to the Stadium of Light to work with Poyet – who helped to revive his career in England last season. The defender even favourited comments from Black Cats’ fans appealing for him to return in England, but he will have to wait for his representatives to thrash out any deal. Both full-back slots have been problematic for the Black Cats. They have sourced alternatives, including Nice left-back Timothée Kolodziejczak – who is also one of Sam Allardyce’s targets if the West Ham boss does not manage to nick the former Bolton man from under Sunderland’s noses. One of the complications is several agents have claimed to have a mandate to negotiate Alonso’s move to England, which has resulted in a flurry of conflicting stories. However, Sunderland’s transfer team – headed by new sporting director Lee Congerton – remain confident of a deal.
Sunderland are in the market for loan captures to bolster their squad next season. The Black Cats have made an enquiry about Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma and are keeping tabs on other Premier League stars who might be loaned out, including Arsenal’s Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell – who has been one of the stars of the World Cup. Sources close to Zouma insist he would be interested in discussing the move with the Black Cats, who may have to wait until pre-season has progressed to see if Jose Mourinho regards him as part of his first-team plans. It is a sign of Sunderland’s intentions they intend to again try to operate in a market which has been a great help to them. Last season the squad was boosted by the loan recruitment of Fabio Borini and Swansea schemer Ki – and sporting director Lee Congerton intends to use his contacts around the top flight to try and help Sunderland to have the pick of the best loan players available. The Black Cats’ interest in Zouma is an intriguing development. Although they have John O’Shea and Wes Brown there is a recognition at Sunderland there needs to be an injection of pace and mobility as well as more serious competition at the back. Sunderland hope to include stopper Mo Diakite in a possible deal to bring Marcos Alonso back to the Stadium of Light next season and there is hope they can negotiate a move for Santiago Vergini to bolster their back-line. They need numbers to bolster their back four with the club having released starlets John Egan and Louis Laing over the summer. Laing has signed for Nottingham Forest while Egan is interesting Blackburn, who were also bidding for the talented Laing. In the coming days the Cats are also set to progress bids for Fabio Borini and Swansea’s Ashley Williams, who the club would regard as a “statement signing” which illustrates their desire to move up a level next term. Italian reports claimed the Wearsiders had tabled a £10million bid for Liverpool forward Borini last week.

Black Cats and Hoops can move now Ethniki have been eliminated from proceedings... Premier League duo Sunderland and QPR will commence battle over the signing of a World Cup star now that Greece have been dumped out of the tournament. The Black Cats and the Hoops are said to be keen on signing the Ethniki's Bologna star Panagiotis Kone ahead of the new campaign. Article continues below... Both clubs will face stiff competition from Serie A, with Torino, Palermo and Lazio also rumoured to be preparing bids following the winger's star showing for Greece in Brazil. With Bologna likely to accept a bid of around £3m, neither club is likely to be put off an advance, so it will come down to the player to decide where his future lies. This plays more into the hands of Sunderland manager Gus Poyet than his QPR counterpart Harry Redknapp, with the R's squad currently overrun with midfield operators. QPR have no fewer than 14 midfielders in the first team squad and while some are likely to depart before a Premier League ball is kicked next season at 26-years-old Kone is unlikely to relish the opportunity of fighting for a place in the starting XI week-in, week-out. By contrast, Poyet has just eight recognised midfielders on his books and while the likes of Lee Cattermole, Liam Bridcutt, Jordi Gomez and Adam Johnson will be expecting their share of game time, Kone could expect to get more minutes in the red and white stripes of Sunderland than the blue and white hoops of QPR. Kone, who started his career in Greece with AEK Athens, is something of a late bloomer, but after hitting 11 goals in 59 games for Bologna last term is hot property in the Italian top flight. His World Cup was cut short by injury but he did enough to boost his profile in Greece's surprise run to the knock-out stages and at £3m is a punt worth taking for Poyet. The Black Cats, who are priced at 9/2 for the drop this year, managed to score just 41 goals when flirting with relegation and would surely boost that tally if Kone picked up where he left of last term.
If Alonso goes all t!ts up I thought that Greek left back looked canny like. Dont know who he plays for.
