Giaccherini delighted to be linked with Roma

AS ROMA TRANSFER MARKET NEWS - ”I don’t know anything about Roma, I’ve read the news on the Internet and I think my agent has been clear in these days. Rome is an important environment, I think any player would be happy to play there,” Sunderland midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini told Radio Manà Manà Sport this evening.

“From what I have seen, Roma were the team that has delivered the best football in Italy, but they still need some important players to win. However, Garcia has done an amazing job this year,” he added. “It’s not the last day of the transfer market,” he concluded.

Want Giacc to stay but wouldn't begrudge him that move.

Roma look like a really prosperous club, and he'd have CL football.

Hope he stays, my absolute blessing if he goes to a club like Roma (and we get the correct fee, £7-10 million)

There's no way we can afford to lose quality like Giacc at the minute. We've barely got an ounce of real quality in the squad to start with.

SUNDERLAND will turn their focus away from the Bosman market after landing their third out-of-contract player of the summer.

The Black Cats completed a hat-trick of free transfers this week after ex-Manchester City stopper Costel Pantilimon followed Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez to the Stadium of Light.

Landing three players well-versed in the demands of the Premier League has proved to be prudent business from head coach Gus Poyet and sporting director Lee Congerton, who have been faced with the task of reinforcing a squad decimated by the departures of seven out-of-contract players and five loanees.

But the capture of Pantilimon is likely to represent the final Bosman signing of the summer, with Sunderland now shifting their attention to targets who will involve a transfer fee.

Sunderland have been linked with out-of-contract Blackpool winger Thomas Ince – who would require a compensation fee to be paid to the Seasiders due to his age, rather than being a free transfer.

But the Gazette understands that the 22-year-old, who is being targeted by QPR, Stoke and Hull, is NOT on Sunderland’s radar after coming under consideration by Poyet during the January transfer window.

Instead, it is those players who are under contract to other clubs who are now at the top of Sunderland’s hit-list – a shift which is unlikely to see any further arrivals imminently.

Swansea centre-half Ashley Williams and last season’s loan success Fabio Borini are two of Sunderland’s principle targets and the Black Cats are prepared to be patient in the pursuit of both.

Sunderland saw a £4m bid rejected for Williams last week, but that has not dissuaded the club from maintaining their interest in a player who is about to enter the final year of his contract.

With veterans John O’Shea and Wes Brown both reaching the final 12 months of their Sunderland deals, Poyet realises the need to have an eye on the future in his central defensive ranks.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins is due to return from holiday today and Williams’ future will be at the top of his agenda, with the Welsh club still hopeful of agreeing a new deal for the 29-year-old.

As well as Sunderland’s concrete interest, QPR are firm suitors too, although Hull are now likely to pull out of the race as they near a deal for out-of-contract England defender Joleon Lescott.

Sunderland’s hopes of re-signing Borini on a permanent deal also promises to drag on and is likely to depend on whether the Italian is willing to leave Liverpool.

After boosting their attacking ranks with the signing of England international Rickie Lambert, Liverpool could be receptive to offloading Borini if they receive a tempting offer for the forward who was Sunderland’s joint top scorer last season.

But Sunderland’s hierarchy realise that Borini still wants to prove himself at Anfield and although they are ready to invest heavily in the 23-year-old, he needs to be prepared to re-join the Wearsiders.

Sunderland are interested in Leeds United striker Ross McCormack.
McCormack was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 29 goals.
West Ham, Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa, Derby County, Norwich City, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Southampton, Leicester City, Celtic and Malaga are also reported to be interested in the striker
Leeds are said to be wanting over £8million for the 27-year-old.

    Ross McCormack (Leeds)
    Yeltsin Tejeda (Saprissa)
    Morgan Amalfitano (Marseille)
    Rene Adler (Hamburg)
    Bryan Ruiz (Fulham)

Five new names have been added to the list this week, taking our running total to 41.

Sunderland confirmed the signing of Romanian goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon this week, with the 27-year-old signing a four-year deal after arriving on a free transfer.

    Pantilimon will provide competition to Vito Mannone who established himself as the club's first choice goalkeeper last season but the 6'8" Romanian international has made it clear that he didn't join Sunderland to warm the bench;

I spoke to Mr [Victor] Piturca [Romanian National Team manager] recently. It was very important for me to play every game, and now I have found this solution [moving to Sunderland].

I want very much to return to the national team.

To be first choice is very important to me, and that's why I chose a club where I was wanted and where I had a chance to play.

[Vito] Mannone is a good keeper, who played well in the previous season, but my goal is to earn my place in the team. I'll give everything, I'll work hard to be a regular for Sunderland.
That being said, it's still hoped that Mannone will sign a new contract at Sunderland with Gus Poyet hoping the signing of the Romanian provides real competition for places between the two senior goalkeepers. The signing of Pantilimon should also see Jordan Pickford head out on loan once more, the young 'keeper recently signed a new four-year deal and will be looking for more experience before challenging for a first team place at Sunderland.

    As one player joined the club, another found a new club after being released by Sunderland at the end of the season. Academy product Louis Laing joined Nottingham Forest on a one-year deal with the option of a further year. Laing was highly rated but had seen his progress hindered by injuries and, according to the player himself, the revolving door in the manager's office at the Stadium of Light;

I haven't got a bad word to say about Sunderland, but for me changes of manager here and there maybe didn't work in my favour.
The day before Pantilimon flew into the North East to complete his move to Sunderland, there was a report claiming that the club were interested in German international goalkeeper Rene Adler. According to the report Poyet was hoping to sign the Hamburg 'keeper for around £2.5m but wanted a full medical conducted due to a knee injury the player picked up in the last game of the season.

With Sunderland completing the signing of Pantilimon, Adler actually suffering quite a severe herniated disc in his back (rather than an imaginary knee injury) and the player rated much higher than the reported £2.5m fee quoted, I think it's fairly safe to say that we can completely ignore this rumour.

Ross McCormack was linked with the club this week, with Fulham having a bid rejected for the striker, Sunderland were mentioned as one of many, many clubs who are closely monitoring the striker's situation. Although we already have Connor Wickham, Steven Fletcher, Jozy Altidore and Ignacio Scocco on the books, a move for McCormack wouldn't be entirely unlikely if the club were to sell Scocco.

Speaking of which, Scocco has been the subject of a bid from former club Newell's Old Boys, with their president hoping to strike a deal with Sunderland for the striker. It's thought cash-strapped Newell's will struggle to give Sunderland the return on their investment but with both the player and his agent pushing for the move, we may see the club cut their losses on a player who clearly wants to return home.

Fabio Borini has been linked with a move to Southampton as a make-weight in a potential deal for Adam Lallana and/or Dejan Lovren. Whether or not Southampton take an interest in Borini, you should expect Sunderland to try and get the extremely popular Italian striker to return to the Stadium of Light next season but with Liverpool still making moves in the market, we may have to wait for Brendan Rodgers to bring in replacements before he considers letting Borini go.

While the club wait for movement on the Borini front, we have been linked with two players who can also play in a similar role. Marseille's Morgan Amalfitano and Bryan Ruiz of Fulham.

Ruiz scored the winner against Italy in the World Cup but has just come off another disappointing season with Fulham, where he struggled to make an impact before being loaned out to PSV Eindhoven in January. He did improve in the Netherlands with five goals and 3 assists in 14 games but with Fulham being relegated he is expected to leave Craven Cottage this summer. Although a good player, he never particularly adapted to the Premier League but at 28 and with one year remaining on his contract, he would likely be available for much less than the £10m Fulham paid FC Twente in 2011.

Amalfitano is reportedly available for £2.5m from Marseille after something of an erratic season on-loan at West Bromwich Albion. He did get four goals and four assists in 28 Premier League games but was in and out of the side as he tended to be either completely anonymous or a class above most of his Baggies team-mates.

Both players would be good additions to the squad, have Premier League experience and wouldn't break the bank but neither would be an improvement on Johnson or Giaccherini out wide and it seems doubtful that the club would use their limited transfer funds on players unless they could go straight into the first team or were young players with plenty of potential.

Sunderland are also believed to be keeping tabs on Yeltsin Tejeda, who is a regular in the Costa Rica team and plays for Saprissa in his home country. The agent of the 22-year-old defensive midfielder says there has been interest in his client from the UK, Belgium and Spain but with the player likely using the World Cup as something of a shop window, it's hard to say if there is any genuine interest in the player.

Marcos Alonso has been linked with a move to West Ham and Swansea but Poyet has said he is doing everything possible to make sure the player returns to the Stadium of Light next season and with Fiorentina still hoping to sign Modibo Diakite on a permanent basis, an eventual swap deal between the two clubs would appear to be a good move for all concerned.

And finally, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Sunderland captain John O'Shea. According to reports, Spurs want to add experience and versatility to their squad and are willing to offer Poyet £3m for the Irish international. Sunderland appear to be baffled by the report but with the player only having one year remaining on his contract this looks like an attempt to gain leverage ahead of potential talks over a new deal, rather than any genuine interest from Spurs.

We have been linked with a loan move for young Chelsea midfielder, Lewis Baker, before and the Sunday People today repeat that claim but also add that Sunderland are in for 18- year-old centre back Andreas Christensen, said to be a top performer in their under-21 side.
Man City also keen but the kid wants Prem experience so we may be a better bet.

Both highly rated... For good measure the People are reporting that Jose Mourinho fancies taking Gus Poyet's son from Charlton where he has run down his contract. Gus may be able to manipulate that to his/Sunderland's advantage.

The Costa Rican’s goal beat Italy on Friday, ending Roy Hodgson and his players’ World Cup adventure in the process.

Ruiz a man on a mission. He wants to prove he is not the flop he was branded after Fulham farmed him out on loan to PSV Eindhoven in January.

Ruiz, who will lead Costa Rica against England on Tuesday, wants a Premier League return.

He said: “I want to show the English what I am and that what happened at Fulham is not real.”

Relegated Fulham will probably accept a fair bit less than the £10million they paid FC Twente for him – and Sunderland’s Uruguyan boss Gus Poyet is a big admirer.

Arsene Wenger, also in the market for a new striker, is likely to run the rule over Ruiz on Tuesday – and especially his partnership with Arsenal’s returning Costa Rican wonder kid Joel Campbell.

The Teessiders have agreed to flog Marvin Emnes to Swansea City for £1 million.

While Derby County are expected to have an improved offer of around £1.5million for Lukas Jutkiewicz accepted by the Riverside outfit in the next few days.

That would swell the club coffers, with Aitor Karanka keen to splash the cash and put his stamp on the Boro squad.

Moves for Sunderland’s Danny Graham and Charlton Athletic defender Michael Morrison could follow.

Arsenal and Sunderland are reportedly both considering a move for Fulham attacker Bryan Ruiz.

The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan with PSV Eindhoven, is believed to have no intention of remaining with the West Londoners in the Championship.

He is keen to join a Premier League club, which has alerted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and his Sunderland counterpart Gus Poyet, according to the Daily Express.

Both managers are at the World Cup in punditry roles and are said to have scouted the Costa Rica captain.

Ruiz joined Fulham from FC Twente during the summer of 2011.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at Lyon and, according to reports in France, has opted to sign for the Welsh outfit over Premier League rivals Newcastle, Sunderland and West Ham.

Newcastle were rumoured to have offered the striker £75,000 a week but he will instead sign a three-year deal with Garry Monk's team.

Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool are keeping tabs on Wilfried Bony so Monk will be relieved to have secured Gomis' signature.

    Get in for bony Gus!!!!
