A club's approach to selling players should be that they'll do so when, and only when, it will improve the team. This changes with the club's overall position.

if you are a poor club with one very good player, then by selling that player you may be able to strenghten 3 or 4 other areas (for example, if blackpool or wolves had had carroll and decided to sell him). the team will be stronger even though none of the players may be as good as the one they replace.

when the team is reasonably strong but could use strengthening in limited areas, the process is harder to do with an overall benefit to the team but is still possible (villa selling carroll, for example).

when you are one of the best teams in the league, it is never wise to sell your best player (man u selling carroll, for example). you want the best player in the league in every position, if possible.

we are somewhere between the first and second examples. we shouldn't be in a hurry to sell, but shouldn't rule out the possibility either.

20 million? Chelsea paid 24 million for Essien, Tiote is just as good if not better and less injury prone and the market values are far greater from when Chelsea signed Essien.

This concept of buying young talented players to build our team is a bit useless if we sell them when it turns out that they're actually good players.

We'll just end up as a lowly feeder club to the top 4 teams. We use our scouts and cash to invest and gamble in young players, then when the risk pays off, a top 4 club comes along and takes them away. Rinse and repeat.

THIS!

Tiote shouldn't be sold, but will be if United or Chelsea come in.

Why would Chelsea want Tiote when they have essien, Mikel and Ramires. If we are serious about getting back at challenging for Europe then we need to keep players like Tiote. It's wonderful to see big teams like United and Chelsea wanting our players, but that's it. We need to build the team around players like Tiote, Jose, Barton etc . Hopefully in the summer we can spend 30 mill plus on 2 - 3 world class, young players. If we can do that and not sell our best players, then it's exciting times ahead for the future.

We should act like we're selling Tioté, but sneakily change the name on the contracts to James Perch...

That is as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning....

some of our lot do this constantly with some of our key players - every week there is a sell gordon, sell henderson, sell the groundsman thread. as long as you don't need the money (and you don't), why sell a key player?? if tiote wants to leave, and starts sulking and playing badly (hello darren bent), it's about getting the most money you can for the club, but as long as he wants to play, why sell?? build a team around your best players.
