We need to clear up a few points, Ken - but your interest in history pleases me greatly. It was Pepin the Short, son of Charles Martel and father of the Great Charlemagne, who sent the Muslims packing from Narbonne. This took place during the 8th century, approximately five hundred years before the Battle of Najera (the restoration of Peter the Cruel). Pepin lived a relatively long life, dying on campaign at the age of 54. It was Charles the Bad, King of Navarre, who allowed the Black Prince safe passage through Aquitaine. Charles' death is beyond ghastly, yet many still believe it to be divine justice for his political wrongdoings. I shall create a potted history of Narbonne and post it in due course.
Pepin, Charles, what's a missing letter or two between friends? Anyway, it was Pepin the brief at the wine tasting thing. As bad authors sometimes write on books, these are the facts....only the names have changed. Given he died at 54, I'm surprised that the Spanish called him 'Pepin the Brief'. Maybe he just was'nt much good at conversation.
By the way, could we change the name of this thread to 'Summer music, travels and history' as it's blooming nicely in all directions?
