If selling a left back means we can strengthen elsewhere e.g Chambers for Mane then let’s do it.
I’d prefer Bertrand to be the one left............................................................................back

I agree about the crowd. I hate that and always have. Separate discussion me thinks.

My concern for this debate is if Matty is good enough for Ralph and where he wants the team to be.

Lack of pace might be a problem, because as others have said, you can’t really teach that. I don’t think he lacks either ability or character, so it depends how (or indeed if) Ralph wants to use him.

I’m probably biased towards him because - like JWP - he’s one of our own, but I make no apology for that.

I like Matty (and like Archer I am biased), so I am interested to see what will happen. Ralph sees him in training, so will be the best judge of whether he is a good fit to our team now. He might not be a Ralph ideal, but remember we won't get everyone we want to sign so it may be a case of can he do a job for us at some point in the season.

AZ Alkmaar said to be interested in Clasie who is apparently eager to leave Southampton (hardly a surprise). Article finishes with suggestion this could happen if Saints aren't unreasonable...I suspect it is a good time to deal with us (especially for a player clearly no longer wanted)...whilst we won't give players away, I can't see us being unreasonable....get them off our books. And good luck to Clasie….it didn't work out, but I'm sure he tried.

My favourite Targett moment was in the Koeman years (second one I think), Arsenal away 0-0, one or two minutes left. We get a throw in and Matty walks all the way to the ball, slowly, but doesn't pick it up. He looked at it and then jogged back onto the pitch for someone else to take the throw in. Best legal bit of time wasting I have seen in a game yet.

Hate to be Mr Haughty, but actually you can (at least to a reasonable extent). Football clubs tend not to though, especially with adults. I have never quite understood why on this an the technical aspects of running as you can often see why injuries recur due to basic biomechanics and it's not that difficult.

In summary - all IMO, of course:

- Bertrand is not as good as he once was
- I would not begrudge him a move if he wants one
- But I would rather he chose to stay with us
- If he does want a move, we need a new left-back
- Matt Targett isn't good enough to be first choice

I have read rumour that Arsenal are interested in Bertrand .....any truth your end DTLW?

Southampton reportedly had a bid rejected by ES Troyes AC for starlet Bryan Mbeumo, as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to freshen up his squad this summer.

The 19-year-old is also said to be a target for Bundesliga duo Schalke and Wolfsburg respectively, while Ligue 1 pair Bordeaux and Strasbourg are both interested in a move for the attacking midfielder.
