my prediction is certain cities will hammer diesel off the roads with charges like london but the emissions tax on diesel will be driven through the roof very shortly.

Diesel's on low car tax are already getting hammered, via the cost of diesel!

20p a litre more expensive than petrol completely wipes out and economy saving by initially going for diesel anyway.

The pisser is that we were recommended to go for diesel by government in the first place, and now they're punishing people who followed their advice.
It's also another tax on the less affluent, because they are the ones that can't afford to buy new cars every 3 years.

Only being punished if you do excessive miles (which is what diesel's are best for).

I'd never buy a brand new car regardless of my financial situation. Depreciate far too quickly.

Wouldn't buy a new build house for the same reason but that's backed up by how shoddy new builds are nowadays too.

Got a diesel, £20 a year tax but price of diesel is a piss take compared to petrol atm.

Might think about getting new car in couple years if I can afford it as will hopefully be moved into new house by then (assuming I can sell mine and find somewhere we like and can afford)

it'll all be electric cars by then. You need to find a house with a space for charging point.

I'm sure the pace of change is going to ramp up rapidly with taxes and charges.

then the greenist will tell us the batteries are bad next.

Most petrols are £280-£300 road tax. Yours is £20.

Desiel is 20p per litre more expensive.

The £260 car tax saving equates to 1,300 extra litres. Depending on how many miles you do and your cars economy, are you better or worse off?

I'd be getting a hybrid if I could afford one. No way I'd go 100% electric

yeah. I was talking to a main sales guy at a trade show from Toyota on sustainability and they have designed all cars to be modular and expect to drop in hydrogen fuel cells rather than full electric.

they are world leaders in the tech and they have decided the drive train with be electric but the source of power is still very much undecided as batteries just don't cut it

it's be a hell of a lot easier change service stations to hydrogen than put in 50 spaces where cars park for 2omins to get a sip of power.

all electric is a pipe dream imo.

We have a charger in our work car park and 3/4 spaces are reserved for electric only cars to charge up during the day. Quite nice really, plug it in during day, no need to drive to petrol station etc and guarantees then a parking space at work.

thats all well and good til 6 people have cars needing it and the fights break out.

Its FREE as well which won't last.

We have a **** here and we have one charging point FREE as well... and the **** sticks his hybrid suv (BMW one i think) on it all day.

If 50% of your car park is electric cars and theres not the chargers then there'll be rows.

Companies have fallen for this "green" washing where they stuck a charging point in and pretended thats sustainability sorted for the year. the next thing they get a massive whopping electricity bill if they have to supply all car cark and then they need to start charging you as it is actually benefit in kind.

    None of this will last.

Once a certain threshold is crossed where rare becomes just on the edge of common there'll be a creaking infrastructure and it'll be chaos.

Companies like ours have now created expectation of free juice. why would i charge a car at home? they won't keep it up.

Its not free you have to pay for it. It’s just convenient to be right there. I’m sure if it becomes more popular they could put couple more in around d as well

Different markets... But I was always the same way, thought new cars not worth the extra cost... But the last few times I've car shopped I've found that buying a car that's a few years old doesn't save you as much as it used to.

My current el cheapo little commuter I got for $15k. At time when I was looking two year old cars were selling for less than $1000 less. For me, it was worth paying the extra $1000 to get 2 years extra warranty and two years worth of car

Easily worth paying the little extra in my case... 7 years old now... Still has another 7 years in it, I'm sure.

My wife got a 1 year old car last year... Managed to talk an out of town dealer to offer a brand new car for same price (same specs more or less)... But the Mrs wanted the light blue colour they don't sell anymore so she went with older car even though I could of got new for same price.

In the US it's a bit of a myth that buying used is necessarily better... UK market might be different though. It might be worth looking at new, just in case for a few K more... Especially if there's a good warranty involved.

Deffo different. I picked up a corsa for 6k a few years back that was 1 and a half years old. Think a new one was going for like 12k. Obviously the valuation depreciates less the older it gets.
