Tonight I am relaxing with a bottle of Pavillon La Tourelle 2016, Medoc. Yes RHC it is French. As there is sod all on TV I am reading book 4, Viper's Blood, of the Master of War series by David Gilman. God I hate it when there is no football to watch.
The 100 yrs war, very good. Similar to Bernard Cornwell's Thomas of Hookton series, but the main character starts as an archer then becomes a man at arms. Link to the first in the series https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1781850593/?tag=not606-21
soooo..... whats the catch, its period drama no wierd **** going on so is it a life story or do we enter a world of fantasy here?
Historical fiction. The character is placed in a historical context within the events of the time. The first book starts with him in his late teens. There are 5 in the series to date and they follow his life through war torn France during the 100 years war. If you like historical fiction such as Sharpe, the Raven series, etc you will enjoy it.
sounds ok, I don't like if something is very specifically set that it wanders off as a convenience and ends up in a fantastical situation. One author i liked but did this was a guy from cornwall who started out writing about a fictional character set into rome, or carthage i think and he did 3 books with each person and tried to tie historical events into a "close to greatness" type scenario. The hero of the book was close to hannibal or hannibals generals etc. Ben kane was the authors name however it got a bit fantastical at times, as in the history was reasonably good but then it branches off into something requiring massive luck to survive etc etc. place the reason for winning at the feet of the hero. Anyway. Sharpe i liked.
If you like Viking adventure type books Robert Low is good and so is Tim Severin. Both series follow a group of vikings as they plunder away.
a bit or rape and pillage. TBH i've not had any book on that genre. I've mainly done roman historical books.
I have tried a few Roman historical books, but never really been able to get into them. Prefer my historical fiction medieval or Napoleonic. Just realised this should really be in the book thread.
I enjoyed Conan Igguldens Emperor Series and his Conqueror series. David Gemmells Troy series is good too.
ah should be what harm I suppose when i started reading david gemill was about and he based series on an alternative universe where scottish lads called brigante were resisting romans called from the city of stone. Or druss the legend etc. one of my favorites was actually the jerusalem man which was a pure fantasy. Overall it placed me in the earlier conext although the later brigante series became based in the jacobian times. I have switched to American authors since. Brandon sanderson has a mildly interesting series he has been writing for a while.
Tried a few of Janny Wurts recently think I'm on book 3 or 4 of the Light and Shadow books. Started off I really liked her style; really descriptive almost poetic but it ends up grating a bit and I got impatient.
Yeah it's why I thought I try her solo stuff. Don't get me wrong it's really good writing. .maybe tv has ruined me like the kids of today and I don't have an attention span.wkth anything lol
