My lads were into Highlander the series - probably because it was a bit gruesome - so we watched the film. Not really my thing either.

He isn't exactly "today" either... He's more from a few decades ago... But I suppose there is "the rock" now.

    Yes you're right.

If we are talking 'today', the film industry is filled with individuals with zero acting ability. Where to start? .... Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lopez, Robert Pattinson, Ben Affleck

None of them are quite as wooden as John Wayne though... I think that was just a 60's thing. Now they're bad in whole different ways.

Dont know who Pattinson is, but the other three did most of their acting quite a long time ago now too.

There are still LOTS of bad actors around, don't get me wrong, but the Shatners and John Waynes of the world today don't seem to get such an easy ride to the top.

Looked up Pattinson... Ok... Yeah... He's bad. Twilight was awful. Kirsten Stewart was a terrible actress too... That whole movie was full of bad acting all around. But she seems to have dropped out of the limelight... Didn't last too long.

Bad acting in the 60's almost had that... "I'm on a stage, overacting so the people in the back row can see my gestures and hear my tone clearly" feel. Bad acting today is more of a general non sincerity between what they say and how they... Well.. act.

I'm not condoning it, I'm saying that it is used to change the mindset of people so that they accept the commercialisation of services that should be basic provisions of a civilised society.

    i saw that. hilariously bad

then there was john wayne at the foot of the cross.

truly this man was the son of god....
    ..... partner.

    anyone.remember that?

or the longest day. in a wheelbarrow or something waving his hand about.

wayne's best performances were in movies where he was very young or very old .true grit for the comedy value. sands of iwo jima etc.

thetr are wioden actors right diwn the history of film imo.

    charlton heston
    john wayne
my personal most hated keanu reeves
    the list goes on.

studios get a guy who is easy to work with and sells and they pump them out imo.

He's still hugely popular today amongst some people and was so prolific. He's almost a genre unto himself. 100 years from now he might still be famous and "The Rock" or whoever the closest modern equivalent is will be forgotten.

Some people find it difficult to separate fact from fiction. I bet John Wayne has a huge following who actually believe he is a hero.

He made a very jingoistic film about Vietnam when the tide of opinion in the USA was very anti war.

Clint Eastwood is a good example of someone who transitioned from a kind of decent actor into being a very good filmmaker, apart from his latest film which is trash <whistle>

Yes, but he also directed or was in Gran Torino, Flags of our fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Mystic River, so many ace Spaghetti westerns. So you can forgive him the odd duff one. As a percentage of films he has either starred in or directed his record stands up to scrutiny.

My comment was more about his latest film being trash, I have not seen it so can't comment on it. I was trying to make the point, however clumsily, that anyone who has a good body of work is allowed the odd duff one.
