I came in here for some mature chat as this is supposed to be a haven of calm. What do I find? - A discussion on pink bicks!!! I might just as well have stayed on the Banter thread - at least those idiots are talking about food!

The Chef's on the Cookery Thread would be shocked at your critisism of their gourmet skills.

I took that as more or less, we bought the depth and youth, a few marquee players. I would take having 2 top players over say 4-5 average/young/maybe will become great players at this point.

"We signed nine players since Kenny came back so there will be a few adjustments but nothing massive. We have done the hard work and now it is a question of making some adjustments in certain positions."

No DC, you have not done the hard work, if you think our squad is anywhere near the level needed of winning (or challenging!) for the title then you've got a shock (and a sacking) coming

I hear ya Red, I just don't think we should go buying loads more. Would really just like to have that crafty number 10 and someone to score. Maybe some more width.

Let's just rewind time and buy John Barnes and Peter Beardsley - job done.

I know, quality over quantity, but I don't like the stance that we're all ok bar a few tweaks. We're not, we're at the level just about required to challenge for top 4, we will need players to hit max form to get fourth and beyond that most probably a mini-overhaul to challenge for the title.

In the words of clay davis- " shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitah"

You should see my squad in Fifa ( no longer since I got papped out for not winning the league <grr>) I got rid of pretty much the entire team and replaced it. I haven't liked the look of our squad for awhile but I know that they are here and they are playing in the red shirt, as much as I think Downing and carroll are useless, I still feel you have to give them some backing. But would I go buy a sow, higuian, etc in a heartbeat.

For me, we should be looking at the likes of Strootman, Marin, Vargas, Javi Maritnez, Dede Ayew, valbuena, Ozil and as for the forward, I think no matter where you look you will probably have to pay a few quid so anyone we could get really. I think all of these could be attainable, some more under the radar then others.

Also think it funny that this comes out, merely days after Comolli says " Big players are looking to come" Just screams made up journalism.

In today's market a player like John Barnes would be £40 mil +

We're bound to buy a couple of 'squad' players in the summer - nothing more nothing less, by the sounds of DC.

So DC has made some press statements. On face value one contradicts the other - good. Whilst he will not have been merely sitting on his arse since January he is not going to divulge exactly who are targets are or the size of our war chest.

Dave I think you're wish for a discussion on food on this thread has just come true. Good work M.N.S. although I'm not sure who's cookery book contains the recipe for a good **** sandwich.

On the subject of transfer kitty and summer buys I think we have to be very clever this coming transfer window. We have a solid base to build on now and we absolutely have to take this opportunity to build on it. I really wouldn't expect DC to come out and say we have a huge amount of cash (look how Newcastle raped us knowing we had money available) it's what we spend that counts not what we say we'll spend.

Do we need to spend? Simple answer is to look at the gap between us and the top two.

Do we need to improve the squad? Yes but with first team players not more "squad" players (which just means players who aren't good enough to start regularly).

Do we need to spend big money? On the face of it yes but think about who we spent big on over the last 12 months...Mandy, Downing and Henderson...compared to what we got much cheaper...Enrique, Bellamy and Adam. Granted you could throw in Suarez as an expensive signing but then as he was a lot cheaper than Ajax were originally asking I'd say we got him relatively cheap.

IMO it's about spending wisely not just flashing the cash about. If we do make two or three "marquee" signings then we have to be as certain as humanly possible that they are going to improve the first team straight away and not in 12 months when they've had "time to settle".

    Sod the sarnies!

Billy, the catchword for this summer must be quality. There is nowhere in the squad that we can truly say would not be better for the inclusion of quality players.

    Nice one Sky <laugh>

I agree Dave quality is vital. Defensively I don't think we need to add much as long as the management feel Coates will be up to the job of cover for Agger next year, Kelly, Robbo and Flanny are good young squad players to have around (and Johnson looking capable at left back as well), centre mid we aren't horrendous once Lucas is back in the equation but for me we are so short of creativity out wide and up front it's alarming. Hopefully if Luis can rediscover his form it won't look quite so bad but if we were to go for two big name signings then IMO it has to be two great attacking players.
