From a legal stand point they in my opinion will need to prove that you were aware of this rule. If you say you weren't aware you need to establish how the company rules regarding it were made knowledge to the staff. If they sack you I'd go to a tribunal over it.

My mate got sacked from tesco when were in our teens for eating a out of date cream cake. I did far worse when I worked there but as I was good and liked I never got into trouble. Christ I got caught having a food fight with rotten veg, a rotten cauliflower narrowly missed the store managers head. I loved working in a supermarket when I was a teenager. We had a right laugh. One year I made sweary doughnuts. As the dough was proving I cut letters into them so when they were cooked and in the packet they said things like **** and ****. When making Christmas doughnuts in the shape of snowmen I made them male and female using a variety of decorations. Chocolate hundreds and thousands for pubes etc. did a roaring trade on them had people queuing up for them . I knew how to have a laugh eh??
