This is YOUR tax money that's being wasted. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34142499 Why don't these Police Force areas swap cars with the West Midlands - who now have cars without sirens & lights ( to save money ) - and officers are not permitted to exceed speed limits etc. What next - will police officers be told that Health & Safety will not allow them to 'run' when chasing a fleeing criminal ? The only reason why civilian employees are given 'marked' police cars is to create an illusion of 'more' officers on patrol than actually exists.
They had to Google it ! As you know, recently I've had a number of issues relating to my telephone landline / internet service. A couple of days ago ( after the call-barring pin number fiasco ), I needed to ask my TTelephone provider about certain (basic) features that I was interested in being provided.-------- I wanted them to intercept my calls for two weeks, so that I might be rid of the calls for Nathan Kemp ( post No.950 )....... Now. I KNOW that this is possible - but the 'technical expert' to whom I spoke, wanted to put me 'on hold' whilst, (and I quote) " I Google it to see how that works." I kid you not !
Marks & Spencer haven't got the hang of 'deals' I was in an M&S store and looking at their fruit selection. I saw that a punnet of Raspberries was priced............................................... £2 Next to the price was an invitation to buy two punnets for..........................................................................................................................£4 And immediately next to this 'offer' was an invitation to buy three punnets for..........................................................................................£6 Don't really know what to make of this exciting incentive to keep on buying more - would it be rude if I told them to BOGOF ?
M&S is designed for capitalists who don't 'need' incentives to buy......they trade on their perceived quality and 'snob' value to circumvent such vulgarities! I dream of being able to afford their (miniscule) meals for two....which in reality are meals for one but beautifully packaged for those on diets........
Did his brother once play for The Gills ? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-34226016 I was reading the story with some sympathy for Mr.Blake - although I could understand that there had been an unfortunate (genuine) MISTAKE by the officer - acting to prevent somebody - who had been identified to him as a policeman who should have been on 'desk duty' - from potentially causing a public nuisance. There I was having pity on Mr.Blake for being the victim of MISTAKEN identity - when - and WITHOUT ANY justification, he decides to suggest that his skin colour might have been the reason why the police officer 'jumped' on him. This cretin gave NO EVIDENCE for his accusation. He is a disgrace and an embarrassment to all humanity - especially those of maxed race 'colouring' -- because, as I see it - Mr.Blake has embarrassed ALL such people by using the 'race card' as a defence where NO bigotry existed.. What next - will our stewards be accused of racism if, whilst conducting their duties, they 'pick on' fans of mixed race colouring. ?
alwaysright - don't agree with you in saying he is a cretin, disgrace and embarrassment to all humanity. The guy was attacked without provocation or reason in a public place. Regardless of the police officers reasons or intentions. Also to just say he looked like his twin is unacceptable. I think Mr Blake's contributory suggestion could be valid, as it is alleged in the media quote; New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said Mr Blake looked like the suspect's "twin" and later apologised to him. Hence does 'twin' indicate same race? CA; Race discrimination is when you are treated unfairly because of your race, or because of the race of someone you are connected with. ‘Race’ includes colour, nationality, citizenship and ethnic or national origins. Any of the activities carried out by public authorities, such as the NHS, government departments, local authorities, the police and prisons. Race discrimination can be direct or indirect. It may also take the form of harassment or victimisation. Race discrimination does not need to be deliberate. Someone may be discriminating against you without realising it or meaning to, but this might still count as discrimination.
brb I am comfortable that you may see it differently from my viewpoint - but Mr. Blake is 'accused' NOT of having the 'wrong' colour skin. It is alleged by the Police Chief that he could be taken for a (hypothetical) 'twin'. The facts are that the skin colour in question happened to be the same (regardless of colour). Surely the same 'twin' allegation would have been relevant if the skin colour of the 'actual' person and the 'mistaken'person was white, green red or whatever. If the skin colour of Mr.Blake was the opposite of the 'actual' person - then I would accept that some sort of discrimination applies - but if the police was going to jump on the person who they thought was the 'actual' person, then the skin colour ( if very similar as in this case) is irrelevant. Having analysed the available information - I can accept that the Police made an 'honest' mistake - albeit that they made a dogs dinner of their action plan - but I firmly believe that somebody was always going to be the unfortunate victim of awful police procedures -but - those procedures were conducted in an unprofessional manner - rather than out of racism. The police would have acted in the same manner - regardless of the skin colour - in fact - having chosen to pounce on somebody of the same colour of the 'actual' person only adds credence to their rebuttal of the allegation. The police were stupid in the way they applied themselves - but I don't believe that they were bigoted - and the unfortunate 'twin' (Mr.Blake)has provided NO substance to his claim.
If he had been in London in 2005 he might have been mistaken for a 'wired up' Moslem terrorist, instead of a sports star or harmless local resident Brazilian worker and murdered by Special Branch on a crowded Underground train.I guess when you are an innocent dead commuter, skin colour does not really matter any more. Too late then mate. Case here in Cyprus a couple of years back. Police spotted a car that had attempted to run down an officer a month or two previously. So they ran it off the road, dragged out the driver, and took him to the local nick. He was handcuffed, taken down to a cell and given a severe beating by the two policemen. When the true facts eventually emerged, he had only owned the car for one week! Be very careful who you buy a car off.
OTiC and my point would be that the skin colour of the motorist was irrelevant to the fact that the police made a pigs ear (no pun intended) of not checking identity before beating the excrement out of him -- not because his skin colour was purple.
Riverdance Just been watching Riverdance on the Last night of the proms. How do they do that ? - THAT is what I call quick footwork - maybe Gills should adopt some routines to speed up their game.
Jeremy Corbyn is now leader of the opposition and within his first day of being Labour leader, he's already gone back on one of his original promises of rewarding women in his cabinet by not giving any of them the high profile jobs. This has also included both of the ladies that were up for the leadership. Nice work Jezza.
Pegleg Are you trying to get me into trouble ? I've had enough problems with my 'perceived sexism' - you knew that I couldn't keep away from your post - and that I will turn out to be the bad 'boy' (again) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-34245061 I know that shadow education secretary may not be a 'top, top ' job -- but at least she has got one of the jobs available - whilst the rest of the Labour members have to be satisfied with being 'merely' MPs for their constituencies. I would be very surprised if many employers recruit personnel without first having some 'physical' meeting / interview - so why would anyone (regardless of their sex) receive such a 'privilege' ? I firmly believe that an employer should be able to recruit whoever they wish - preferably an employee who is best suited to the job - not one who is employed because of a need to defend against any discrimination on grounds of; Sex, skin Colour, Race, Religion, Age, Sexual orientation ,Physical / mental disability or Criminal record. ( have I missed out any of you out there - sorry ! ) nb - if any of you think that my post has any 'ism' in it - I'm sorry - THAT is furthest from my intent. I am unable to write my thoughts in any other way - it is the most impartial I can be - If you doubt me - I have to ask one question - who would you have in the Gills' team - a (hypothetical), footballer whose name just happened to be Mark McCammon - who was a fine athlete of a white young man, who was an hetrosexual English Christian of impeccable character - and a very good footballer ( I told you he was hypothetical ) ----- OR---- would you choose Mary McCammon (hypothetical) who was the complete opposite of her hypothetical brother ? ---- Tell me you wouldn't pick the best person for the job.
and now a little light relief from post No.972 _________________________________________________________________________ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34246119 That's no good - I'll have to use more plates - more washing up ! How am I expected to get all my food on smaller plates ? <passmemytrough>
On the contrary always, I'm merely trying to engage a friendly debate as all. Now I don't disagree with your points, however the fact he had already promised to reward women in his shadow cabinet and then going against that claim is already a black mark against his name.
Pegleg You've got enough on your hands with your 'discussion' with brb regarding Cody McDonald. I won't compound your difficulties - partly because I couldn't care less what happens to the Labour Party - but more importantly because the matter involves women - AND - I'm old and wise enough to know that, when it comes to the fairer sex, I'll be damned if I say anything - AND - damned if I don't ! --- but I'll get into less trouble if I do or say nothing ( I hope ).
I was so sorry for committing murder that.................. I had to commit another murder - just so that I could show you how sorry I am ! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-34264165 The story is tragic - but I couldn't help laughing at the report that the police are STILL looking for a motive.
Inglorious Basterds (not my spelling) No - I'm not being rude - It's the title of a film I 'tried' to watch last night. I could have swung that baseball bat at my screen in frustration at not keeping up with the sub-titles. I can usually read quite quickly - but the sub-titles were on the screen for barely a second before they were gone. I would defy any viewer ( who isn't fluent in French and German ), to have properly followed the dialogue during the parts that were not in English. The editor/ producer / whoever was responsible for the sub-titles, gives you no chance of following the script - I could do my own editing and change the film title to 'Inconsiderate Bastards' ( and it wouldn't have taken long for correct spelling ).
Is it reasonable ? Genuine question If somebody is (long term) unemployed- is it reasonable for YOU ( the tax payer ) to be expected to fund ( through benefits ), a £50 a month phone contract for the unemployed ? - and bear in mind there is more than one person in Britain who is on benefits - and - there are MANY phone contracts that cost much less than £50 a month - AND - still capable of offering an adequate service. The reason for the question - is because - on 'Britain on benefits' program, the phone 'bill' on a 'budget ' account, was clearly visible on the list of outgoings of a young couple who BOTH were 'on the sick' through anxiety and depression I have family and dear friends who are 'on benefits'. I have no trouble in my taxes going to help 'unfortunate' people - but I do expect them NOT to extract the urine with an outrageous phone contract.
Very good question and on face value the answer would be no it is not reasonable. There are certain networks that offer unlimited data, texts and phone minutes for £20 per month max, and not on contract, flexible for cheaper options EVERY month, without penalty, if financially restrained or require lesser usage, however, that does not include the phone (handheld device) itself. Landline charges for internet with Sky without TV and call charges is about £23...so even the two combined is less than the amount quoted. I accept in 2015, people have to have internet connection, as i found on moving home, you are more or less crippled without it. However, £50???....i think they need to budget better certainly.
I used to be well known - now I don't even get onto the 'WANTED' list. I have just received my third letter this year - from the local authority - asking for details of the occupants of my property - with a view for inclusion in the 'voters' register. When I say 'I' have received the letter, I should say 'the occupier' !! OK, it won't take long to complete. It comes with a pre-paid envelope - ( pre paid by MY council tax ), and an opportunity to register online --- all very handy - BUT - why am I being expected to do this for the third time in one year ? AND - they threaten you with a fine if you fail to register ! Each March I receive my Council Tax bill ( correctly addressed - to me - not the 'occupier' ). So, they do know who I am. I'm going to use their, sorry I mean MY pre-paid envelope, to let them know who I really am - you all know me by now ! If you think that I'm being stupid - (you're probably right ), I have one question for you - When was the last time you asked your local authority to do something 'once' for you - and they came round three times to perform the task ? ( I'm not talking about regular things like bin collection /road sweeping - although when was the last time that happened ? ).................. ...... after all, I pay my Council Tax - correctly - at the FIRST time of asking. ps - (if my post survives), I certainly will get known on the Leeds board this morning ! My local authority have caused me to go into 'wind-up' mode. I have asked the Leeds fans a question about them NOT being famous anymore - so why boast about this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-34269315
