Interesting article by GG which has led to a whole string of comments (which I've not read yet).

Has self funding ever been possible in the PL?
May be possible in the lower leagues but not at our present position.
Frankly I feel sorry for DF. Last year promotion was done on a shoestring, they must be deluded if they thought he could do that in the PL. our budget must have been the lowest ever given to any promoted club. The result of that as we know is relegation.
Next season, when we have sold our very best players we could have a possible £100m more in the bank.

Never in the field of premiership football have so little been given and so much expected!

Sadly I can’t see Webber and DF being here next season, they have been dealt a poor hand here.

Disagree with that. SW is calling the shots now and making the most of what he has available. The long-term plan isn't about the money spent, it's about the players brought in. Drmić, Fährmann and Byram were all good signings on a budget. Roberts and Amadou looked to be good loan signings but didn't work out. Being on loans that cost us very little and avoided being stuck with expensive players who don't fit - just ask Newcastle about the £20m they spent on Joelinton's one goal.

In January we brought in Duda and Rupp who both went straight into the starting lineup and have already made a difference with 4 points from the last 3 games and it should have been more. Even if it doesn't work out this season, we've also brought in 9 younger players as we build for the future. SW and DF know exactly why we've done it that way and won't be going anywhere any time soon.

But if they can achieve all that at a club with no "war-chest" imagine what heights
they could hit without those constraints weighing them down.

I'm not sure about that Cromer. As at Huddersfield, SW knew exactly what he was taking on when he came here, as did DF, who was previously managing in the 4th tier of German football. Success can be bought if you have millions but is there any great credit in that. Look at Fulham, QPR, Cardiff and others who have thrown money at trying to buy their way to the top and failed miserably. I'll take long-term planning and development over quick-fix gambles any day. I want us to earn our success and that's just what we are doing, though that has been nobbled by freak levels of injuries this season. My final judgement will be made at the end of the season taking all factors into account. If we do end up in the Championship, then we'll be well placed to compete from there next season. It won't be easy but our long-term investment in young players and Academy One status will continue to pay off on enhanced self-financing budgets over the coming years.

Not sure I agree with this. I think their responsibility as owners is to ensure that they do nothing to harm the continued existence and longevity of the club, whilst continually trying to improve and develop it . Yes this may include relinquishing some control to make the club better, but only to investors that have a genuine interest in the long term well being of the club and the community around it.

They have already relinquished a lot of control to SW and the others in the new corporate structure, which is the biggest step forward the club has ever taken. No longer do we take short term jumps from manager to manager. Having a Sporting Director and Head Coach creates long term development. Even if one or both left, the structure would continue to move forward by developing young players for the future. If we're relegated that development will continue.
