Interested to hear what @Taffvalerowdy thinks of the latest from the WRU…..wouldn’t it be easier to have no professional rugby at all in Wales? It’s pretty obvious that the WRU is far from professional itself….do they pay themselves as much as the chaps at the RFU get despite making a loss and presiding over a system which sees teams regularly go tits up, often in dodgy circumstances….no gloating here.

A sad day for Welsh Rugby and in many respects is a failure of governance going back decades.

In my opinion, the WRU (Worst Rugby Union?) has not been fit for purpose for years: it has failed to manage and grow the national game, in short, it has not had the Management expertise and professionalism required to thrive and create a consistent and viable rugby model.

Additionally, much of the wider problem stems from the flawed concept of Regional Rugby.

The WRU has repeatedly cut teams in the hope of improvement, whilst also cutting funding and working against the best interests of the professional teams - something I experienced first hand! (I think I’ve mentioned previously that I was involved in Club rugby for a number of years in the 1990s and then involved in Regional Rugby for 3 seasons in the 2010s - so in the ‘shamateur’ days and in the pro era.)

In short, if the WRU cannot increase Commercial income significantly, then it follows that there is not enough money to fund four competitive regions.

South Wales (the heartlands of Welsh rugby) can just about fund two professional football teams, so arguably funding 4 professional teams is too much of an ask.

If we had a British premiership including Welsh clubs would it help? Or maybe just an Anglo- Welsh one.

I believe that we had the opportunity of having 4 clubs in a 2 Division Anglo-Welsh League 20 odd years ago but the WRU rejected / vetoed the proposal……

Won’t happen as WRU is a shareholder and their overall record since the game went pro is almost as good as England’s and France’s:

South Africa smash the All blacks 43 10
Springboks inflicted a record defeat for the All Blacks, but nowhere near the 96-13 mauling they gave us (Wales) in 1998.

(We had some decent players - 4 Lions in the starting XV and 2 more on the bench.)

England take on the All Blacks, this will be a good measure of how far we've progressed from the disappointments of recent seasons. Nine wins on the bounce should have our confidence at a peak whilst NZ have been less than invincible recently. Game on...
