They could have recovered, the problem is that they haven't. They have continued the pattern Benitez set in his last two years of identifying players who are having one or two good seasons and then massively overpaying for them. Keane, Johnson and Aquilani were followed by Carroll, Downing, Adam, Allen, Borini, Mignolet, Lovren, Lallana, Moreno and Balotelli, none of whom are good enough to be at a top four side, let alone one aspiring to the title.
And it's not so much the transfer fee as the wages. If you pay a big fee then you accept it, swallow the loss and move on. The problem comes with the wages - once Gerrard leaves then Balotelli and Johnson will be the highest earners at the club, despite being bench warmers at best.
It was a lot easier to keep salary demands down when the manager could point at Gerrard and say there's a club legend who has played hundreds of games, scored goals and won trophies, your salary will be set at a proportion of what he gets. Now the players can point at Balotelli and say if that lazy lump of **** gets £110k a week then I'm worth much more than that. That's the message the agents will be putting in Sterling and Henderson's ears every week Balotelli and Johnson steal their wages for doing **** all.
Rafa Benitez is such an overrated buffon.
Yeah it's not been a great season for us so far but I'm still hoping for the FA Cup and that would turn a ****e season into a fantastic one. Long way to go yet though.

Keep dreaming. The way Brenda is going I can see Blackburn stuffing the RS.
Many on the RS board are already looking forward to Wembley. Won't it be great if the RS had egg on their faces for disrespecting Blackburn![]()
That man uses his post match interviews for self promotion. Beating Newcastle at home was like beating a team wearing "flip flops on a sunny beach".Brenda thinks a top 4 place is in Liverpools hands, sadly for him its not.
Oh yeah, he loves himself and certainly believes his own hype. How many other premier league managers are on talksport talking to Alan Brazil at least once a week?
Answer; none. Most are too busy doing their jobs instead of being slimey self promoting ****ers.
Can't stand the bloke.
