That was exactly my thoughts regarding Educator and the Listed race entry. How could they have thought he was ready to run at that level when he failed so miserably in a maiden?

Narrow winner Masekela had an official rating of 107 coming in and the Racing Post gave him 105 for winning it, with Bayside Boy awarded 104. The third was rated 99, so that is the mark Educator would have to have beaten to get third place.

In his own race Educator was 12th of 14 and was rated 47 by the Racing Post, so he has come up shy by 52 lbs in achieving a dead-heat for third in the Listed race. That seems a huge gulf between expectation and reality.

You can hardly call Haggas a bad judge. He landed a huge four timer on Saturday that paid in excess of £2000 for a £1 and scooped the Group 2 and Group 3 at Deauville with modestly enough rated horses. He must have been bitterly disappointed with Educator's performance though.

Maybe if Her Majesty were like a Game Of Thrones Queen, Haggas's head would have been on a spike outside the palace on Saturday night. There's an image to conjure with.

Can't disagree with a word of that. My own view is that it might have been the Racing Manager.

Reach for the Moon goes for the Solario. The next day a new 2yo appears, Clear Day, in the first at Sandown. On paper well-bred being by Camelot out of an Oasis Dream mare who traces back to Highclere. If he's any good there will be a few red faces: they sold the mare.
Trained by Haggas, he's his second Royal 2yo to be entered this season.

A new trainer is added to the Royal roster as Clive Cox is sent two 2yo fillies.

    They are:-
Yarralumla f by Australia out of Free Verse (Danehill Dancer mare out of a Machiavellian mare who was a half-sister to Oaks 2nd Flight of Fancy)
Silver Screen f by Lope de Vega out of Silver Mirage (an Oasis Dream half-sister to Flight of Fancy).
To be honest both mares need a boost.

When I started following the Royal horses she had 4 trainers which quickly dropped to 2 in 1969 when Boyd-Rochfort retired and the leasing of National Stud horses stopped which Murless had trained. She now has 8!

Saturday saw another Royal double with both being Royal bred. My dismissal of Evaluation obviously worked as the gelding won a 3 runner handicap at Lingfield of an OR of 64. Probably more to do with it was the first time he'd been tried over a real distance (15&1/2f). He became the 26th winner of the year.
Earlier in the day Reach the Moon, ridden hands and heels, won the Solario. It wasn't a vintage field and they went no gallop, but one has to say he did it well. You can also say he has a fair change of pace, which he showed with a kick when Dettori asked him to quicken.
Another thing you can say is he represents, just about, the best 7f form seen so far. He was beaten by Point Lonsdale at Royal Ascot but as I said at the time I felt the AOB colt had the harder race. This colt has done no wrong since so the form looks good.
There's talk of a tilt at the Champagne before going for an October Group 1. That would give him 6 races this season which is a lot these days but Mill Reef managed 6 as a 2yo for example, but trainer and jockey seem to think he needs to race. He looks a very good colt but has to show that bit of brilliance. He may still do that this year.

Like London buses, 2yo entries 9, 10 and 11 arrive for the 2nd September. First up, in Salisbury's Quidhampton Fillies Stakes, is the already mentioned Mellow Yellow, who's a Dubawi Darley donation with Haggas. In the same race is Charlton's Fresh Fancy who's a New Approach full-sister to the average 2yo winner Pied Piper. In an earlier race on the card Clear Day gets another entry. After the Quidhampton is the usually instructive Dick Poole Stakes and Intelligentsia gets a chance to show her debut win was no fluke.
Later in the day no.11 is entered at Chelmsford and that's the Recorder gelding Loudspeaker who was reported in dispatches on the gallops a few times.

The Wiltshire heat (Quidhampton Maiden Fillies' Stakes) is usually an exceptionally hot maiden and the first 3 home last season (Lady Hayes, Light Refrain and Noon Star) have all gone on to subsequently earn black type.

Interestingly, The Queen had the runner-up in the race last year (Light Refrain). One better in '21???

Although Fresh Fancy does have 2 additional entries on Friday.

Yes usually a good race the Quidhampton: Dick Hern used to like introducing his staying prospects in it. A guess would be that if it was split that both entered fillies could run. As you say Fresh Fancy has another entry at Haydock in a race in which Improvise (Bell) is also entered.

Saturday sees even more 2yo heats at Haydock and Ascot. I wouldn't be surprised to see 4 or 5 runners between Thursday and and Saturday.

Only Intelligentsia stood her ground at Salisbury: maybe the firmish ground scared them off. Those withdrawn have alternative appointments on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

A couple of poor performances by Light Refrain and Tactical at the weekend. Both seem to be training off.

Loudspeaker, a Recorder gelding, makes his debut at Chelmsford today. I'd have recommended him for an EW chance, as his gallops reports seem to show he's got some ability, but his forecast price is a bit short. He's the last foal of Daring Aim so half-brother to Bold Sniper and Queens Prize (dam of Tynwald and Award Scheme).

Upped to a Group 3 I'd expect a bold showing from Intelligentsia today. Moore gets the ride.

Plenty of 2yos in the next few days.

Encourage was sold for 75,000gns at Tattersalls.

After a shocking run from Intelligentsia (surely something was amiss?), Loudspeaker, given a gentle hands and heels run from his apprentice pilot, couldn't do anything to redress the balance.

Today there were two Royal 2yo winners. Saga confirmed his promise with an easy victory at Ascot over 7f. Just how much the team think of this colt will be revealed by his next engagement. Stable mate Park Street couldn't get a double up as he was easily put in his place at Kempton.
However Improvise, on her second start, got home by a long-looking head at Haydock. She was very resolute in the finish. Again her next engagement will be instructive. Her dam Set to Music wasn't up to much as a 2yo but improved out of all recognition as a 3yo, winning 4 races including the listed Galtres Stakes. In her subsequent start she was 2nd in the Park Hill, whose distance was perhaps beyond her. Improvise could easily get 12f and may be the type of 3yo to improve to Group class.

I noticed that Mr Bell's July sales purchase of Bookmark got off the mark today. A winner for the Royal Stud but not The Queen. Her 12,000gns purchase price looks cheap now.

Chalk Stream has his 4th win of the season and chalks up HM's 29th winner of the year. He is of course a full brother to Reach for the Moon, who looks as if he'll run next week. 29 wins equals The Queen's best total so she should set a new record this year. Chalk Stream is beginning to look a useful gelding.

Apparently Intelligentsia was unsuited by the undulations at Salisbury.

The 13th Royal 2yo is entered and this time it's Balding's first Royal 2yo runner of the year. With a name like Tack it won't be a surprise to find he's a half-brother to Tactical. Arguably better bred being by Iffraa, he is entered in the 7f maiden at Doncaster on Friday.

Monday sees Mellow Yellow making her debut at Newcastle. A Dubawi filly out of a Jeremy mare, she is a Godolphin bred brought-in 2yo.

Tuesday sees Educator having another go at justifying his lofty engagements. Haggas seems in form and he may show better this time. He goes to Goodwood.

Hannon seems to have faded in the ranks of Royal trainers, even though he trained her first winner in 2021 (that was sold). He supplies the 12th entered 2yo this week in the form of Everyday who is entered on Thursday at Chelmsford. By Cable Bay out of Humdrum he's a half-brother to 3 winning colts.

Fresh Fancy not declared for another race. This time Sandown Park on Friday. By my counting that's now 5 races (both on turf and AW) that Mr Charlton has, in her case, failed to turned an entry into a declaration!

Will she be worth the wait?!? Fresh Fancy's next entry is Monday eve at Kempton Park. In this instance though William Buick has already been booked.

The Royal mare of the moment is Golden Stream. She’s by Sadler’s Wells out of a Machiavellian mare called Phantom Gold, who had won the the Ribblesdale and two other G2/3 races for The Queen. Golden Stream is a full-sister to Flight of Fancy who won only one race but was 2nd in the Oaks. In fact after Golden Stream had won her first race it was reported that Golden Stream was considered a better prospect at that point of her career to Flight of Fancy. As it was she won more races than her sister but only managed Listed wins and black type at Group3 level. Interestingly she never won over further than 7f, and was never tried over further than 8f.

Up to the start of May this year her stud record wasn’t very inspiring. This was how it looked then:-
2012 f by Dansili, unraced and sold
2013 c by Dansili won one race as 2yo and on debut as 3yo but headstrong and temperamental, also sold
    2014 rested
2015 f by Redoutes Choice unraced, sold after two infertile years at stud
    2016 barren to Dubawi
2017 c by Dubawi unraced, sold
2018 c by Sea the Stars maiden after 3 runs
2019 c by Sea the Stars unraced

Then in May the 2018 colt (now gelded) and called Chalk Stream, won a small Leicester Handicap off an OR of 71. In late May his younger brother Reach for the Moon made his debut in a small Yarmouth maiden and finished 2nd. At that stage it was probably the best performance by any produce of Golden Stream. In June Reach for the Moon reappeared at Royal Ascot and gave the Chesham favourite Port Lonsdale a run for his money. Since then this 2yo won his maiden at Newbury before easily winning the Solario at Sandown. What is more Chalk Stream has won 3 handicaps. His recent win off an OR of 94 must now put his rating into 3 figures After the race Haggas said he’d always been a beautiful mover but had taken time to mature. Their view was that he was still learning. As a gelding The Queen may have many years of watching this useful stayer ahead of her.
But what about Reach for the Moon? Only Port Lonsdale can best his form at 7f and there is every chance he may stay as well as his older brother. This week he runs in the Champagne Stakes as a precursor to his attempt at a Group 1. This race could be his toughest as he faces the July and Gimcrack winner Lussail. A race to savour.

So what of Golden Stream? She has a yearling filly by Dubawi and colt foal by Siyouni. It would be nice to keep the Dubawi filly for the stud as Golden Stream is 16 years old now. Who should they send her to? Well I’m sure Sea the Stars will be top of the list and maybe a son of Sea the Stars. What is noticeable about the current brothers is that in their second generation is Sadler’s Wells and Urban Sea, and that is the pedigree of Galileo (of course not in the same generation or order). Perhaps it is this ‘nick’ of these 2 horses that is key. We’ll see.

What about the sold fillies? The Dansili filly, Thames Pageant, has had 3 foals and the third, Twilight Gleaming, was 2nd in the Queen Mary before taking a listed race in France. The Redoutes Choice filly,Tidal Stream, was bought by Highclere Stud and produced a Land Force foal this Spring. Two valuable mares now thanks to Reach for the Moon.

Both Everyday and Tack ran with some promise but needed the experience. They'll both be aiming for a small race in the next 6 weeks. Meanwhile Mr Bell cleverly wins another race with Bookmark, who as a relation of Golden Stream begins to look not only a good buy but valuable.

Well she ran eventually and she was worth waiting for. Hope you had a few bob on.

Charlton's first Royal 2yo runner and always looked a likely winner after she stopped pulling for her head. By New Approach and the second foal of a Fastnet Rock mare that Charlton trained. She stayed 12f and you'd expect Fresh Fancy to stay that distance. Her full-brother Pied Piper doesn't have her speed.

That's The Queen's 30th winner of the year and that is a record. Pleasingly 7 of those wins are by 6 2yos from about 12 2yo runners and that's not a bad strike rate. Plenty of Royal runners this weekend including the promising Saga and the reappearance of Mellow Yellow.

With 6 winners (of 7 races) out of 13 runners YTD The Queen is having her best 2yo season for some time. What of those who haven’t run? Here are the 16 other 2yos that haven’t run under their trainers.

Haggas (Two 2yo runners so far, no winners)
Clear Day c by Camelot out of Dawn Glory: entered but never declared
General Idea c by Galileo out of Sweet Idea
Perfect Alibi f by Le Havre out of Daphne (first foal)

Balding (One 2yo runner so far, no winners)
Distant Light f by Fastnet Rock out of Light Music (half-sister to Light Refrain)
Duty Bound c by Kingman out of Key Point (half-brother to Punctuation)
Imminent f by Dubawi out of Enticement (full-sister to Diploma)

    Stoute (no 2yo runners)
Transpire c by Frankel out of Estimate
Kiteflyer c by Iffraaj out of Star Value
Naval College g by Dartmouth out of Sequence

Charlton (One 2yo runner and winner)
Discretion f by Dubawi out of Momentary (full-sister to Wink of an Eye)

    Cox (no runners)
Silver Screen f by Lope de Vega out of Silver Mirage
Yarralumla f by Australia out of Free Verse

Unallocated 2yos (some may never be allocated or even run)
Allotment f Motivator out of Ananas
Chancery Lane c by Recorder out of Queen’s Prize
Gold Belt f by Golden Horn out of Hypoteneuse
Line of Defence c by Ulysses out of Touchline

Trainers: Bell (3 2yos, all have run, 2 winners, 2 wins); Gosden (4 2yos, all run, two winners, 3 wins); Hannon (One 2yo runner, no wins) and Hughes (One 2yo, winner of one race).

Looking at above I can’t help but think that Haggas will have more runners and possibly winners. The same can be said for Balding and Stoute. However most of those not entered have stout pedigrees and may not see the racecourse until next year. Hopefully some of them will be given some experience and show some promise.

Haggas has his first Royal 2yo winner of the year with Mellow Yellow at Newmarket. She's by Sea the Stars out of a Jeremy mare, a now deceased sire who is probably more famous for jumpers. However his daughter Yellow Rosebud was a tough 7-8f who had many group and listed races, winning 4 times. Mellow Yellow was resolute in her finish and looks to have a future at mile to middle distances: she still appears green. This was The Queen's 31st winner of the year and her 7th 2yo winner.

Saga was entered for the big 2yo race at Newbury yesterday but was withdrawn. It could be that Gosden held him back for Saturday's Royal Lodge after the disappointment of Reach for the Moon.
