Ouch. RIP Brian, challenging life but created some sublime beauty along the way. God Only Knows must be in contention as the finest pop song since…well, pop.

I also love this

Have you seen Love and Mercy, film with John Cusack playing an older Brian Wilson? Very sad film, starts with Wilson on all sorts of drugs trying to get Pet Sounds going, against everything the rest of the band wanted to do. It then flips between time spans to the older Wilson being badly manipulated by his management team, and then rescued and weined of the drugs they had him on by his second wife. I'm sure they'll have that lined up on BBC in next couple of days

My wife has just reminded me that she saw Wilson a few years ago....an evening I had deleted from my memory as her friend only had one spare ticket so I couldn't go! Said it was a sad evening, he was in the early stages of Alzheimers, and had to be led to his piano....but once he was there he put on an amaziing performance. So gutted I wasn't there!

Brian Wilson, my equal favourite singer song writer, musician, has passed away.
RIP Brian, thanks for the memories............... Love & Mercy.
One of my favourite tunes ........... Till l Die from the Surfs Up album

Carol Kaye, from the wreaking crew ( bass player, studio musos who play on many Beach Boys albums, along with many other famous bands ) introduce new bass techniques to various Wilson acclaimed songs........... Brian's all time favourite song was 'Be My Baby' by The Ronettes. He then wrote 'Don't Worry Baby' because of it.

Interesting that they used Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, there's definitely the 'Wall of Sound' influence in many of their records. Another piece of useless info is that Sonny & Cher were among the backing vocalists on the Ronettes 'Be My Baby'...

Brian Wilson at Glastonbury in 2005 on BBC4 just now, with Love and Mercy on BBC4 at 23.05 tomorrow night

This is a 1968 live TV version of 'Good Vibrations', the harmonies are amazing and note the very early use of a Theremin...

Sooper, have you heard the ‘Smile’ version of Good Vibrations? Quite a bit different wording too. I will try to post it if you want, on your music thread.

If anyone needs to see how great Brian Wilson was watch this, I don't think it matters whether you know musical theory or not ...

Former Scotland captain and British and Irish Lions great Ian McLauchlan has died at the age of 83.

McLauchlan led his country 19 times in his 43 caps and played his last Test against New Zealand at Murrayfield in November 1979.

A prop known for his fearsome scrummaging despite weighing only 14st 6lb on his debut in 1969, McLauchlan earned the nickname 'Mighty Mouse' and was part of successful Lions tours to New Zealand and South Africa in 1971 and 1974.

He was one of only five players to start all eight Test matches on those tours, and scored a crucial try in the first Test in Dunedin in June 1971 as the Lions won 9-3.

"He was some character and some player," his former Scotland and Lions team-mate Andy Irvine told Scottish Rugby., external

"He was smaller than most props he came up against but I never saw anyone get the better of him.

"He was so tough, almost indestructible. What a fantastic career he had for Scotland, and the Lions. It's very, very sad."

McLauchlan served as Scottish Rugby's president from 2010-2012 and stepped away from the board in 2019, giving 60 years of service from his debut as a player.

In 2013, he was inducted to Scottish Rugby's Hall of Fame and in 2017 he was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List.

Scottish Rugby said it was "immensely saddened" to learn of his death on Friday.

RIP <rose>
