My wife and I once stayed at his house in Hawaii for a couple of nights in 1993. Kris wasn't there but his wife and kids took us in when we had no accommodation. They made us feel very welcome and it's a memory that we both treasure. RIP Kris. My heart goes out to his family.

Kris Kristofferson, the award-winning country singer and actor who worked with Johnny Cash and Martin Scorsese, has died aged 88.

A representative said he passed away "peacefully" at his home in Hawaii on Saturday, surrounded by family.

The statement described Kristofferson as "a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a sex symbol, and a family man."

The multi-award winner was known for his songwriting, notably credited for Me and Bobby McGee, and Help Me Make It Through the Night, among others. He also acted in the hit movie A Star Is Born.

I missed this, sadly...

In the Nineties he was prepared to play almost anywhere, once flying to London just to play one night at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden.

Ok. I'll try and keep it brief.
In 1993 we were on holiday in Maui driving to Hana at around 7pm and were stopped at a road repair. We asked the workers if there were any places to stay for the night and they didn't know, as they weren't local to that town, but they asked the other drivers. The woman in the car in front of us walked to our car and told us that the town essentially closes around 5pm so nothing would be open. We thanked her and said it was fine we'd sleep in the car, she then went back to her car. A few minutes later she came back and offered us to stay at her place which we initially declined as she had 5 kids in the car. She came back a second time and told us that she had a guest wing and that we were welcome to stay. She told us that she had toured Oz with the Highwaymen. We eventually agreed and spent the rest of the trip to her house vtrying to work out which of the highwaymen she was married to. We followed her to the house on the hill overlooking the ocean which was very down to earth but had amazing views. She made dinner while we played football with the 3 boys and we stayedd in the guest wing - trying not to imagine Willy Nelson sleeping in the same bed. The next day she wrote a list of places to visit and told us to come back again that night which we did.
Kris was away on tour otherwise we wouldn't have been able to stay as he was very private.
She told us that she did it because when she was studying in the UK she got lost and was taken in by an older lady and given dinner and a bed for the night and she wanted to repay that debt.
She was amazing and the kids were very polite but great fun. The eldest girl was from his marriage to Rita Coolidge.
Padded enough?

Netherlands legend Johan Neeskens has died at the age of 73, the Dutch football federation has confirmed.

The former midfielder was part of the Ajax and Netherlands teams credited with creating "total football" in the 1970s.

"With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend," the KNVB federation said in a statement.

Neeskens was capped 49 times for the Dutch and was part of the teams that finished runners up at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups.

At Ajax he helped them win the European Cup three times and their domestic league twice.

Neeskens also spent five seasons at Spanish giants Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey and European Cup Winners' Cup with them.

"His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team," the KNVB added.

"With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights and iconic penalties, [he] will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country."

After retiring as a player in 1991, Neeskens coached several clubs and was also an assistant coach with the Dutch national team from 1995 to 2000.
