He gave an after dinner speech many years ago at corporate recovery event I was at, attended by solicitors and insolvency practitioners. He started off by apologising for being late as he said he was delayed because he had to meet Brian Clough in the car park to pass him an important envelope. He then pointed at various liquidators in the audience and said “hi Geoff, hi Steve, how are you doing Peter?” etc. He seemed to know a good proportion of the audience who had perhaps sued him or his companies or wound them up. A real character, a sad loss.

Very sad news. I always saw Terry as one of our own despite the careers elsewhere.
A QPR legend.
There will be other clubs saying the same of him which is a measure of the man and his time in football at so many levels.

He probably deserves a thread of his own such was his impact on QPR as player, player/coach under Gordon Jago and then manager.

He was playing in the first QPR game I saw and was definitely a key part of why we were so great to watch in the early/mid seventies.

Gave us our biggest single day out at Wembley 1982.

A hugely likeable dodgy character RIP Tel.

RIP El Tel, as others have said, a monumental man in our history. A great player, a great manager and a true character. Some of the hoops and England's best ever football was played under his tenure, a visionary when it cane to management and a supreme man manager. Highly likeable even if he was a tad dodgy. Will be hugely missed but will forever be a part of football folklore !

Yes, technically he will always ever be the only one unless the criteria changes to the available caps at the current time.

Venables held the distinction of being the only footballer to play for England at schoolboy, youth, amateur, Under-23, and for the full international team but as the amateur team was disbanded in 1974 no one can meet this feat.

They don't make people like El Tel these days..... Great player at the start of our finest period leading to our greatest ever side in 75/76..... then to come back as manager and give us a cup final as a 2nd division side and then promotion..... we were a cracking side, then bloody Barcelona made an offer he couldn't refuse.... what we could have been if he stayed.....

What a charismatic person that I had the pleasure to meet. I was about 14 when I met him at the 'football hall of fame' and near the end of our tour we were allowed to ask questions, which I did, as he was one of favourite players. He asked my name 'Peter' and who I supported and I said Qpr which made him smile.
A few weeks later I was walking on Oxford Street and noticed TV talking to some guy, as I walked by him he stopped his conversation and said to me " its Peter right, alright mate" I was dumbstruck, I just said hello.
A few years later I saw him in a restaurant and I said hello, I like to think he remembered me.

He was offered 50% of the club not go to Barcelona. You can't blame him for leaving though.

I still love his Wogan interview where he tries to sell a grass pitch in a world of plastic pitches.

And who can forget the Thingy-Me-Wig.

El Tel had a huge impact on me, as a young QPR football supporter back in the seventies. I always thought he was ahead of his time and rightly or wrongly, he did his best for club & country.

Vale Terry Venables............. genuine club legend.

Terry Venables is arguably our greatest manager. An FA Cup final and replay, promotion to the top tier and European football in his final season before leaving for Barcelona. The season when we got promoted was the first time I did every game home and away. I was on the cover photo of the final game of the season ( Wolves? ) standing just a few yards from him in the stand as Terry celebrated in South Africa Rd with the players after beating Fulham to secure promotion. RIP Terry, thank you for the memories.
