Going to see One Life ( the movie about Nicholas Winton) tomorrow, its the film directorial debut of the guy who does Slow Horses. I already know the story obviously and have seen many documentaries about him, hoping it's decent and I don't blub for too long near the end !
Just finished season three....thanks for the heads up, hadn't heard of it before but it was brilliant. Oldman is different gravy in this, superb acting. Have recommended it to everyone!!
Just finishing Ted Lasso (has been hilarious) … so will have to take a look at this while I’ve got my 3-month offer. Also looking to fit in “Killers of the Flower Moon” which looks good, though did I see it’s over 3hrs long!
I’ve read three of the Slough House books and realised that they are all the same with pretty ridiculous smart aleck banter alongside the daft plots. More fool me for taking 3 books to work this out, but they are very quick reads, no thinking required. Watched the first episode of Slow Horses, Oldman brilliant and Scott Thomas very good as well, but all the faults of the books repeated. I think had I not read the books I would have enjoyed the telly version.
Started watching Fool Me Once on Netflix last night. This is so bad it’s hypnotic - stupid plot, completely unrealistic dialogue, wooden acting even from good actors like Joanna Lumley.
Reading a few of Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther private detective novels, set in Berlin before and after the war. The first two are pretty standard decent reads marred by appalling bad sex scenes. The third one, A German Requiem, set in 1947, is a step above so far, great descriptions of post war Germany, the demoralisation, the fear of the Soviets, the ruins, very atmospheric. An undemanding good read.

I watched ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ last night. Enjoyable, but strangely incoherent in vast parts, especially the first hour, for a Scorsese. Reckon the story could easily have been told in two hours. I was sufficiently intrigued to look up the real story, not something I’d been aware of, and the film seems to closely follow what’s available elsewhere - horrible series of events.
Yeh, did make me wonder how the actors feel when they have to portray these horrible events in their country’s history. I imagine it could put you in a dark place emotionally,

Here's here for those "satisfactory climaxes", and long may they live, as I just turned 70 and everything still working without the need for those blue or yellow pills, although much to my partner's chagrin, I no longer seem to be able to make it through the night without a trip to the bathroom! Will definitely be giving this short series a test drive, thanks Nines, and Stroller for putting a smile on my face.
We just started watching "Fool me Once" on Netflix, looks like the first episode is dated 01/04/2024. You mention 8 episodes is that from a previous season? Opens with military woman meeting and marrying her husband, him later getting shot, her at the funeral with her two kids, also a mention of her sister being killed? Are we on the same page or a different book?
It's the same show mate. It aired here on the 4th of January 2024. There is only one season and eight episodes.
Thanks, it's okay, not exceptional, we got to the 3rd episode, which was cut off and directed to bed after I apparently dozed off for a brief minute!
We also started watching the latest True Detective series with Jodie Foster set in the depths of winter in the far north. A couple of episodes in, get fed one a week. Now our local movie/series reviewer described this as someone slow and plodding compared to a similar British detective series that we have also stated watching, also a couple of episodes in, fed one a week, so no binge watching. Name of that show currently evades me (edit Criminal Record), lead female detective seems to make a habit of getting beat up and nearly shot, Met police?

Spinney's fish market in St. Martins, NB - after much experience can definitely confirm best lobster roll in Atlantic Canada (C$19.99). Fresh lightly toasted bun, bed of lettuce to prevent juices making bun doggy, light on Mayo, always Helman's.

Also picked up fresh scallops straight off their own scallop dragger, a frozen haddock/scallop/shrimp mix, and lobster paté served in container with lots of nice crackers and hunks of lobster on top.Nearby washed it all down with a couple of pints (16 fl oz) of Irish Goodbye Red from Foghorn Brewery. The beer menu attached.

Scallops were excellent this evening, cooked with butter/onions/garlic and served with carrot sand Brussels sprouts and washed down with Chardonnay wine spritzers. Off for my 40 laps in a nearby City 25m swimming pool followed by hot tub with jets, then finish off in the sauna. For senior, unlimited swimming for a year is only C$130 taxes in. Lots of Ukrainians here but last time in the sauna there was a sexy Russian girl, with boobs hanging out, plus a couple of Ukrainian ladies and the Russian told me the Ukrainians were Nazis who in 1941 had "allowed" Hitler to invade the Soviet Union through Ukraine!
Well, as per sort of recommendation by Nines, we have just moved on to Episode 4. I guess we're in too deep now, we're retired folks, so I guess we'll see it out.....
Having a few days in Paris this week, no footy involved for a change. I’ve been here a few times for work over the years but it’s been decades since I was here as a tourist.
It’s a dirty city and the locals are pretty rude, but I like Paris, lots of interesting and characterful little areas in addition to the famous sights. And the food is good. Ate at the Aux 2 Saveurs last night, near Place de Bastille. Very good indeed, French food done by a Japanese chef and his team. Every table taken, mostly by local and Japanese business people, fine dining style but decent portions and €55 for 3 courses, plus drink, quite reasonable for this type of restaurant. Off to a more traditional bistrot tonight, Chez Janou.
