I'm sure I've said this before but as it's approaching Christmas Aldi's champagne Chateau Monsigny knocks the spots of most of it's more expensive rivals, I believe it's around £12 a bottle in the UK, we have to pay a scandalous €19.99 over here due to duty and taxes, but well worth it.......
Any one got their eyes on a Black Friday bargain? I’ll be walking 70 yards to the Fat Pug, where their Black Friday offer (repeated every Friday until Christmas) is 4 pints of Guinness for £10. Get in! I’ll give the rest a miss.
Great programme on C4 at the moment documenting the making of Imagine, with John Lennon & Yoko Ono...
I would normally leave this review on the music thread, however...... Was listening to Radio 6 couple of days ago and Stuart Maconie had Brett Anderson and Matt Osman of Suede in the studio to discuss their last album, The Blue Hour, released back in the summer. Maconie was fawning over the album like a 14 year-old kid, not something that he normally does, saying it was quite possibly the best work that they've done - quite a bold statement about a band that have been about for over 20 years and reached their popularity peak at least 15 years ago. I was never a huge fan of Suede, but he played a couple of tracks from the album and I was immediately hooked, and downloaded it straight away - WOW!! Much darker than their earlier material, has a feel of Keanes' "Under the Iron Sea" and Pulps' "This is Hardcore". Although the album isn't a concept album, each song seems to flow into the next, with an underlying theme. Brett Anderson was telling Maconie that himself and the other members of the band immerse themselves into "Suedeworld" when writing, and this comes from a dark corner of that land. I would recommend listening to the full 45 minutes in one go, it truly is a fantastic record, well worthy of the accolades it has been given so far. Single tracks from the album don't seem to fit well alone without the others, but this one is very good.....
i hope they are not trying to push the album based on this sorry steelsy i thought that was awful might try the full album to see if it sounds better there
As I said mate, the tracks don't seem to fit well on their own, but as an album it's superb.....try another one
Just in from seeing "supergroup" The Good, The Bad and The Queen, headed up by Damon Albarn, with ex-Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong and legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen - superb evenings entertainment. They performed the new album, Merrie Land, in it's enterity. It's quite a dark album, as in Albarns' words the album is "a reluctant goodbye letter” to the European Union following Brexit, and "a series of observations and reflections on Britishness in 2018" - so maybe not a gig for all members of this forum! The stage setting was full of ventriloquist dummies, a nod to the videos accompanying the album, where Albarn is made up in a costume, with a backdrop of an old English high street. Show was in SWG3, a new venue in Glasgow, an old warehouse and industrial unit that has been converted, and only holds about 800 so it was great to see such an eclectic group of stars in such an intimate setting. Albarn really fronts the band well, and had good camaraderie with the crowd, who were well up for it! They're only doing a few nights but if you get the chance, try and catch them.
Imo best drummer in the world by a long way Love Tony Allen plus no one can actually drum like him enigma that bloke brilliant
Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out is back. Two middle aged men clearly enjoying themselves hugely by being stupid with zero money spent on production. Pure, unadulterated genius, thirty years of unique, timeless joy from these lads.
You and Stroller will like these write ups of the gig last weekend.... I like the fact that Albarn has written about Brexit Britain. I enjoyed this quote.... I left feeling pessimistic yet entertained and defiant. That's how I feel (apart from the entertained bit, because I wasn't there).
