I wasn't overly impressed with the officials at today's game. How did Toney not get a card defies logic. To say that the referee was generous towards Peterborough would be an understatement.

I thought that Gills were unlucky - and worked well enough to deserve at least a point. Ward won't score a better goal in his career ( and helped by O'Connor's unfortunate slip. ) The penalty was a moment of madness from Byrne. You can't expect to recover from those -- even if we had more than enough very reasonable chances to score.

Those who went to the game might have been surprised when the referee seemed to get it wrong when Posh made a substitution. The player being taken off was quite close to the GRS touchline - but was allowed to ' crawl ' across the pitch to the subs bench. This didn't go down well with the Gills fans - who suggested that the referee didn't know what he was doing ---- but --- did he actually get it right ??

I do get irritated when so many rule changes are made each season - just for the sake of it, The new 'goal kick' rule certainly allows more opportunities for a team defending a lead to slow down play - to a virtual standstill inside the penalty area .

regarding today's nonsense ;
The referee can allow the player leaving the pitch to go to the bench - rather than leaving at the nearest touchline. If a player is injured and needs treatment OR - if the player might be abused by opposing fans (( as if I would )).
I actually think it should be the bench every time ---- and the fourth official can ( should ), add every second that is wasted (( it might give me more opportunity to abuse the player leaving the pitch if he suddenly loses the ability to walk. ))

so -- the referee didn't get EVERY decision wrong.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Simplest way to make sure substitutions are made in a fair and evenly timed manner is to allow 30 seconds for a player being substituted to leave the pitch from the time the board is held up. If he hasn't left the pitch within the 30 seconds he has to stay on the pitch but the substitution is still deemed to have been made for the purposes of the number of substitutions allowed in the game. This wouldn't affect substitutions made for injured players when medical staff have been permitted onto the pitch, in which case the incoming player can only enter the pitch when the injured player has left. And 30 seconds are added on for each substitution so no playing time is lost.

Tim - not a bad idea - but - it won't stop teams from sending messages to a player about to be subbed --- so that he can go to the furthest point from the bench -then 'fall down dead' - so that he has to be stretchered off ((( what would you call it ? cheating ?? ))).

How about my suggestion -- Last Sunday I was at a NFL game at Tottenham. The game was supposed to last 60 minutes - but each quarter lasted almost 50 minutes. Every time there was a break in the play, the clock was stopped. (( usually for the purposes of American razzamatazz to entertain the crowd - e.g. shooting free T shirts into the stands, or for selected fans to get a whole tray of Subway rolls , or for the lovely cheerleaders to twirl their twirly things ((and pom-poms ))

I'm not suggesting we follow the 'show-biz ' nonsense - but - how about the 4th official using a board that has a stop-watch function. This can be activated and then stopped after the player has left the pitch. This would give an accurate amount of time that is taken for substitutions -- which would be added at the end of each half -- not the obligatory 30 seconds........ and ---another stop-watch to time the actual length of delays for treatment to injuries -- or if a Peterborough player wants to take off his boot, put it on, then take it off again - before putting it back on again - whilst his team wait to take a throw in.

I said earlier I wasn't impressed with the officials -- I actually thought that the referee had forgotten to bring his yellow card !
Gills had a number of free kicks - where a Peterborough player kicked the ball away ( a fair distance ), to prevent the kick to be taken and waste time - but went unpunished. There were occasions when they picked up the ball - and walked off with it - or handed it to the referee as they got into position to defend the free kick........ which, these days, doesn't seem to be allowed to be taken quickly. Not one of the Peterborough players received a card for blatant and repeated time wasting ---- but -- why would they when Mr. Toney managed to commit several fouls, and was 'only' spoken to by the referee on several occasions !!

I accept that your defender greatly assisted with our goal - but - the lack of luck to which I refer, is that we missed very good chances to score - - more because of the lack of quality in our strikers.
We haven't got the money that some clubs have - that's life ! I support and applaud my team when they give 100% ( which they did - and maybe luck could have been kinder )...I was also probably first to applaud Ward for his goal- it was a great strike - but he got a bit of luck when our defender slipped !

I don't like getting into these sort of rants about opposition teams, but it does grind when rich, big spending teams, give it large when they were far from the best team I have seen this season. We also made 3 or 4 problem back passes to Bonham, Posh just weren't good enough to capitalise.

As for the game, we continue to improve and it's only a matter of time until the results start going our way, keep the faith and enjoy the football.

Accrington looked useful against Ipswich today, and though their league position doesn't look too clever they are obviously capable of playing some decent football.

Hope you see a good game, you can't help but see the difference in performances over last season (I hope) and what people forget is the best player from pre-season has only managed 45 minutes so far, he is meant to be close to a return though.
