Ikea has been mercilessly ridiculed for selling a map containing a very obvious mistake.

In a rather embarrassing gaffe for the Swedish furniture company, the $30 BJORKSTA world map fails to show New Zealand.

And, to exacerbate the mistake, the firm is in the midst of opening its first store in the country - having announced last month that Auckland would soon see the iconic yellow and blue building.

A photo of the map being sold in an Ikea store in Washington DC was posted to Reddit on Thursday.
