Van Dijk* As he only recently signed a 6 year contract, I expect him to stay at least another year. None of the players we have sold in recent seasons had more than 2 years on their contracts, apart from Lallana who was one of the rats forcing his way out when it only looked like the ship was sinking. All the top clubs produce players. Spurs have a plethora of them in the first team squad, as do Mancheser United. Chelsea have a flourishing academy but most of their players have to move on for regular first team football, a la Romeu, Abraham.
I appreciate your point, if I change the wording slightly to giving their youngers chances in the first team and really igniting their careers that probably makes the point I was making better. They don't stockpile youngers and play expensive imports in their place. With Southampton I always feel they are more local lads who have been their as young kids rather than being bought from elsewhere and put in the academy
You're an entire defence away from a good team. You'll also need a new striker next summer as well as a left winger that isn't actually a striker and a new central midfielder.

It depends what you're paying him and who comes knocking. If Chelsea or United rock up with £120k a week for him, his 6 year deal will still likely mean jack **** unfortunately. As loyalty and honouring contracts seems to be a thing of the past.
