I would, just not on this bike. If I get a new bike at some point they'll be considered. My bike is in bits now. The wheels are on their way. But I've ordered a new carbon fork for it as well since I'm worried the one I have is unsafe from crash damage, plus it has cosmetic damage which really bothers me. So the bars and front brake are hanging off it at the minute and the current fork is out, it's got no wheels on it either, obviously and I removed a lot of the groupset to clean it properly. I might see if I can strip the damaged fork down with wet sanding to just bare carbon, maybe only the damaged side, maybe both, we'll have to see. It'll get rid of the logos as well
Well, I put my bike back together complete with nice new wheels, new brakes and serviced the chain and gears myself. No new fork yet. I had a nice test ride on Friday evening. Today I went out intending on a longer ride and I got hit by a car about 10 minutes in. F*cker turned left on me as it was attempting to turn off a main road into a side road and I had nowhere to go except into the backside of this car then down. Car passed me just as the left turn it wanted was coming up, indicated late then made the turn but slowed and was blocking my path as it tried to go into the road. Driver admitted to not looking and only focusing ahead, and that they were at fault. Let's see if they stick with that. Lockdown riding days are well and truly gone. The bike is now in a mess, frame scraped up, right pedal scraped, bars scraped and bent, rear mech damaged, shoes and cleats damaged, one wheel possibly too but it's a tiny cosmetic thing I think ,,, still f*cking annoying as I've ridden on them once. My right arm which took the impact is swollen, cut and painful, my right upper leg and hip are stiff. I didn't want to go to hospital because of covid, I don't think I need to but it's sore as and both are going to bruise very nicely. I filed a police report with the info I have and will be pursuing damages, two people witnessed it but walked off before I could get their details as I was in a bit of shock and not really with it to do that. That won't help my case. The driver was acting very nice, concerned and offered to get me a lift home but I called someone when I came to and had collected myself. Driver waited with me and I got their mobile no and reg. Perhaps it was genuine, you don't know with people though. I'll take the bike to the shop to get a list of expenses tomorrow. I'm hoping they write it off really as it's been in a crash before and it's carbon, then I can just claim for a new bike. After that it'll be a visit to a solicitor and hoping. I'd much rather this hadn't happened and I could've just had my ride today and just go out and ride tomorrow. M*thereffer!
****ing hell mate, you're going through some **** lately. Least you're okay (ish), that's the main thing. Hopefully the driver sticks to their word
Damn straight, don't know what the fook is going on in life right now, getting all the nasty karma back at me in a short space of time. No lasting damage to me so I'm glad about that obviously, main thing as you say. Glad I didn't take myself to hospital when my arm was really bad last night as it's going to be alright I think. So no broken bones, but my frame (carbon) seems like it has cracked on one of the seat stays though which fckn sucks. I'll get it looked at and then proceed ... can't imagine this driver's gonna take well to getting hit with a bill for a new carbon frame if she wanted to deal with it privately, on top of all the other damage, so I imagine a solicitor and insurers will be needed and I'm not confident about that given the lack of witnesses. I could also pursue a civil claim if that doesn't fly
Don't let on how much without trying to get a admission first, they'll only try to back out once they find out it's thousands! Either speak via text or record the phone call.
I should've recorded her at the time ... If I'd been with it right after I would've done that. Makes you realise the benefits of a camera too. But that's good advice about keeping shtum on the eventual cost. Driver tried to call me last night, I rang back and got voicemail, then they tried me again but I was driving, not sure why they were calling
I am alright thanks mate, I'm just really pissed about the state of my bike and her dangerous driving, especially since it wasn't my fault, I could take the hit there if I'd been stupid and just crashed it myself or something
Hopefully they are decent and we're ringing out of concern. You not got a bike or helmet camera? I haven't but thought you had
I don't have a camera ... my thinking has been it's unnecessary weight on the bike or me that might change now Perhaps they just wanted to check up on me aye
did you get pics of the bike & car in the actual crash position ? i wouldn't ride on the road without a cam tbh
This is the second crash with a car that I've had. Both times it's been stupid, careless driving at fault. The previous one, about 5 years ago, was a lot worse. Police attended, I ended up in an ambulance that time and in hospital for most of the night. That car ran a red and I really hit it nicely, smashed the windscreen, took the mirror off on the way down. Messed up my face, shoulder and right side nicely. After that I struggled to get out on a bike again for quite a while. I got diagnosed with a moderate anxiety disorder about cycling on the road by a specialist and I'd say that was about right. The claim dragged on as well since she pled not guilty in court. But they convicted her eventually and I think she got points and had to do a course. Got a decent pay out from it after all the solicitor and insurance stuff, but I had plenty of witnesses. The pay out was kind of useless though because I'd been put off cycling then. After that I was dipping in and out with the bike over the years, tentatively, then towards the end of last year and this year with the lockdown decided to properly commit to it. So I was just starting to properly enjoy it again and this happens yesterday. Determined to get the bike sorted though and pursue what I'm owed, and I won't let it affect me in the same way, this stuff just hardens you up in a way
No, unfortunately, she went to get her partner who has a 4x4 as she wanted to give me and the bike a lift home, so she drove her car off. My bike was also in the middle of the road so it was moved by someone to the pavement. I didn't get the car reg at that time and declined the lift because I rang someone myself. They lived nearby though so I ended up going to find the car later in the day and getting the reg then. I wrote down extensively what happened from my perspective though as a statement
Pretty much. I'm doubtful. Especially if, as has been mentioned, I hit her with the cost of basically a new like for like carbon bike, if it comes to that. Even if I quote her the bike's original value when bought that's just north of a grand, plus kit. If we're going off today's prices the equivalent bike now costs over £2000 Off to the shop for an assessment shortly ...
