There's a good general rule....did the person mean to offend?

I asked a mixed race woman once (without knowing she was mixed race) if she'd been on holiday because she had a nice tan. She pointed out that it was her natural colour and I said it was perfect....then we had a nice conversation and laugh about it. She knew I meant no offence.

That is a very nice story indeed.

Now tell us, did she have an enormous penis?

Fair point regarding the original myth in the US. Though I'd say that was a long time ago and many probably aren't aware of it.

I personally don't know any black person offended by it mind, poor taste? Yes but not offensive for me.

Smacks of this current fad of countless people being offended on others behalf to me, not saying you btw.

It was a long time, but the stereotype of black people being hung is ultimately degrading for black people. The same way they're only really ever recognised for physical attributes, Keita (RBL) for example is being described as a Kante-like player, when he's much more similar to someone like Isco. It's lazy stereotyping of black people that might not be offensive to every black person you talk to, but it is ultimately racist to do so and should be eradicated from public discourse.

It's just vulgar and serves no purpose because the player they are singing about won't appreciate it.

Stereotypes will never be eradicated because it is the basis of a lot of humour, but people should be aware that they walk a fine line.

Marina Hyde is one of the best writers in the country, so she is worth paying attention to.

Will have a read of that when I get to work <ok>
Cheers, sorry to be boring, the point isn't that everyone including Phil Neville is an EDL marching bastard or that you should be arrested for finding it funny. Just it would be better to find something else. Ok I'll stop banging on.

Apologies for the delay but had to read the Liverpool match thread first <laugh> <ok>

I understand the point they are making and it has made me understand more about any sterotype is racist etc. (though I was already aware of that to an extent).

Fwiw, I didn't think it was funny really, thought it was a bit **** and wouldn't take off anyway, the video I posted only seemed to have a few singing it and there's a poster on the PL board with a ST in Stretford End who hasn't heard it...

I just think a lot of people are constantly on the look out for something to be offended by these days, even on behalf of someone else, and wonder where it will end... will chanting 'you fat bastard' at a goalkeeper be banned in the near future?

To summarise, I understand the position that kick it out are coming from, I just didn't, and don't, consider it an offensive chant.

Thanks for the link though mate <ok>

I think the comparisson to Kante is that Keita is a box to box midfielder with bags of energy. He is skillful like Isco yes, but isco plays in one of the inside forward spots or just behind the striker. He's no where near Keita in terms of athleticism. He's far more kante like than isco. If you had to truly compare him to someone in terms of style it would probably be Henderson or Can but then that would be comparing him to a **** player
