David Moyes in trouble. BBC reporter Vicki Sparks asked him after the 0-0 draw with Burnley if having owner Ellis Short in the stands was any added pressure. Moyes said 'careful' and then afterwards, thinking he was off-camera, said: "It was getting a wee bit naughty at the end there so just watch yourself. You still might get a slap even though you’re a woman. "Be careful the next time you come in."
We'll see now if Sunderland want to keep him... could be a convenient way of sacking him without a cash strapped club having to pay out.
Doesn't sound very jokey to me, though I take your point. The written word doesn't always come across as it was intended.
Yeah I'm not neccesarily saying it was. Just that without seeing/hearing it it's impossible to get the context.
I have no sympathy, I'm afraid. He went to the wrong club as fast as he could. He went from a nurturing club to one where expectation is all. With his present scenario I suspect he's woefully short on confidence. Time is ticking on his career and he needs to get his next move right.
Sexist? Really? Didn't see anything sexist in it to be honest, just someone (potentially) acting a **** imo.
His biggest mistake was not moving to us at chelsea!. in al honesty luke shaw has always been one to suffer from injuries ever since he played for soton. He would always have stretches where he is out, play for 5 games and be out again. One of those players who has great promise but unfortunately is too injury prone (See anderton, sturridge, ledley king etc).
Agreed. Is it because he said it to a woman that it made it sexist i.e. we are assuming he's only said it because she is a female reporter)? Are we saying that he used the word slap rather than say punch because she is a woman? Or was it because he was clarifying that even though she is a women she might get a slap that made it sexist?. Yea he was being an arse but i don't want to start trivialising every word we use to mean discrimination of some kind
I wouldn't have called him injury prone at Southampton. He played for long stretches of games without a problem. One thing that was absolutely true though was that he couldn't play for 90 minutes. 70-80 minutes and he was blown. Both Nigel Adkins and Pinocchio knew that and played him accordingly.
hmmm... maybe i remember incorrectly. For some reason i thought he was injured quite regularly as i remember having him in my FF team and was always out or showing orange. Just looked it up and he got quite a few appearances
Yes, of course it was sexist. Think about it. The words "even though you're a woman" make it sexist, regardless of what was at the beginning of the sentence. The sentence as a whole make him a sexist idiot.
I don't agree. Going by the quote he was saying he wouldn't treat her any differently just because she was a female. I haven't seen it but it's the type of remark that is often said in jest. It doesn't mean the person is sexist or a wife batterer. As I say I haven't seen it so can't be sure of the intent but it could easily be a bit of messing around. I wouldn't take offense if it was said to me and it was clearly said as a joke.
I guess you are right. In todays language and use i guess that is sexist. Not that it is relevant but i do find it frustrating what gets classed as sexist or racist in todays society (and maybe i don't understand how even minor offences eventually can cause a bigger offence) but for me where does the line get drawn from stereotype to outright discrimination. Just take Moyes example, for me even though he said those words, he's said that because he's angry and the line of questioning, not necessarily because she is a woman. I have no doubt he would have said the same if it was a male reporter. I guess we need to have guidelines based upone exact words though in society rather than having people judging situations based on what we think people are thinking
From your response Whitely, this shows me being over sensitive about ambivalent language, as you say Bobby. Nearly 40 years in the NHS taught me that anything other than strictly gender-neutral terminology is an absolute no-no, regardless of what you actually want to convey in a sentence. Add in the question of racism as well and it's almost impossible to say anything without upsetting somebody. The trouble is that a lot of old-school football people like Moyes lag several decades behind what I have been told by my peers is acceptable. If everyone could agree exactly where to draw the line it would make life so much easier!
Luke was ill advised to move so early from Saints. Ignoring his injuries, he was always a lad who needed careful management to give his best. JWP said he wasn't the brightest and he lacks the self-motivation of the other lads in his age group. United paid good money for him and expected to get a player who was nearly the finished article...he was never going to get the love he would at St Marys. His agent should have known this and done the best for his client....he'd have still got a good move a few years on. This is the difference between a good agent and one who is just after a quick return.
May be ill advised in these sensitive times, but can't see that as sexist....I bet it was said in a light-hearted manner. The real question is was she offended...if she was, she's chosen the wrong profession.
