Horizontalis would work but you would have to train it vertically supported by wires. You could also look at Cotoneasterfrigidus 'Cornubia'. Useful article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/3338891/How-to-grow-the-best-cotoneasters.html
Another gardener also recommends C. salicifolius as it berries well and is evergreen....but looks to be prostrate to me
The Mrs has got some good papayas, avocados and chili güeros going from seeds from the veg we bought. IF anyone cares about those I´ll let you know...
Papayas are called pawpaws in Australia - not bad breakfast tucker too, with the added bonus of 'keeping you regular' all day. My wife used to think I was mad when I grew them in the backyard - they are cross-pollinators and I had to pollinate them by hand using a paint brush. The things we do...
Yes let us know, I wish we could grow Papaya, Avos and Mangoes here, shop bought ones are a bit hit and miss as they are picked unripe and one has to be patient and pick the right moment to eat them. Sorry Mex but you can keep your chillies.
I have just done a tour of my estate and noticed that I am growing C Horizontalis up a fence in a couple of places, more by luck than design as I thought they were climbers. You have to tie them in and they are a bit slow growing, but it seems to work.
Papayas - deseed a fruit, wash the seeds down thoroughly, let them dry out a few days, put them in a strawberry (or similar) box between two layers of moist paper, leave it in a dark place. Seeds should grow from there....
They are almost at the top of a 6' fence but you do have to tie them in and they have a tendency to sort of curl down towards the ground if left. They are quite slow growing and don't seem as thick compared to leaving them to spread horizontally. You will need to prune to thicken them up. When I originally planted them I thought they were climbers!
I have grown papaya, dates, lychees and avo's from seed and they germinate well given right conditions, trouble is they do not like our climate, even indoors, and all subsequently died. The avos and lychees did the best and made short trees with nice leaves. I bought a date palm once from B&Q, it just died! No hope of any of these fruiting. Fun trying tho.
I have a Bottlebrush tree flourishing in the backyard. I didn't think it would survive the cold, but placing it right next to the gas boiler outlet appears to keep it happy.
I have been given a mushroom box to try. The amount of heat required to start it off might be a problem, but I will give it a go. Seems as if it will crop three times with a bit of luck.
Been thinking, I have horrible fences I need to cover and have used, Hydrangea Peteolaris, Chaenomoles and Pyracantha. Just found this link too: https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/articles/graham-rice/10-AGM-climbers-and-wall-shrubs The Abutilon on the tender side.
Struck me looking out of the window this morning that in my case this thread might be more suitably named The Rotting Shed!
