I have a completely unsubstantiated feeling that Russia aren't going to invade and maybe never were. I say maybe because Putin does occasionally go on the principle "let's try this and see what happens". Of course this is one I could be proved very spectacularly wrong and very quickly. However Russia not only has an objective to get parts of the Ukraine into Russia but others, and are very happy to play the long game (much easier when your head of government can't be voted out). They also enjoy destabilising the west, as can be seen from their social media activities, and making themselves look very important. So while they most certainly don't want Ukraine to join NATO, in their wacky terms I think they'll consider getting the west to run around in fear, as we are at the moment, quite a win regardless of an invasion. We also have a military consideration which hasn't really been analysed. The media is presenting this Russian army of 100-150k troops to be some kind of uber invasion force. Well no it isn't, it's not large relative to the task it has. Also it's made up largely of 2 year conscripts. To invade and occupy you need many more than that. Ideally you also don't need to be fighting in that area at this time of year. So my 2p worth, backed up by zero expensive intelligence assets, is that there isn't going to be an invasion. And next time (which there will then probably be), people won't take the threat as seriously, and that will be the time an invasion is far more likely. Remember... the long game.
Ukraine not being in the EU or NATO seems to be the prevailing theme. Periodic sabre-rattling by Russia to impress the point costs them nothing. I suspect that they are quite happy just to have Crimea in the fold, as regardless of which geo-political blocks Ukraine enters into, it becomes much more difficult to attempt to blockade the Russia Black sea fleet by land. That aside, if Russia want to invade Ukraine they can do it on a whim. Beijing Biden has shown from the Afghanistan sh*t show that his regime is clueless, regardless of how much those of his "war pig" backers want things to kick off. No doubt China will up its sabre-rattling in the Taiwan locale too in the months to come.
