I'd be tempted to simply post the tweet from Starmer's account where he makes excuses for handing over Liverpool to the Tories, but I can't - as there isn't one
As usual he has done the politically expedient thing. He wouldn't have won if he opposed it so he chose not to fight. So he can't be blamed down the line. If you want the Tories in forever more then keep criticising Starmer. Only three Labour leaders have won an election: Attlee, Wilson and Blair. All pragmatists.
Rolling over is not pragmatism Abstaining is not pragmatism Saying he will support government bills before he's ever read them is not pragmatism Tearing up a list of mayoral candidates is not pragmatism Issuing a shortlist of one for a by-election is not pragmatism Suspending CLPs who criticise the leader is not pragmatism Paying off whistleblowers against legal advice, which said they would have lost in court, is not pragmatism Janes Callaghan wasn't a Lib Dem
Most of them are actually. And James Callaghan never won an election, indeed he started the lurch to the right by letting Thatcher in at the only election he fought as leader. Just to be clear, I was happy voting for Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock and Ed Miliband. But the electorate were not and need someone like Starmer to reassure them.
No, they are not examples of pragmatism. There is nothing pragmatic about tearing up a list of mayoral candidates without giving a reason for doing so, and rather than issue a list of replacement candidates, instead you hand over control of a city for the next 3-4 years to Robert Jenrick as that is not a practical solution to anything, just as there is nothing practical about demanding that Nicola Sturgeon resign for breaking the ministerial code yet remaining tightlipped about Matt Hancock, Priti Patel or Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson resigning for breaking the ministerial code The word you're thinking of is "appeasement" - and the problem is that he's not even doing a good job of that, considering his idea of appeasing floating voters was to wave flags about, and he's been utterly buried by the explosion of Tory flag shagging in response that could have been avoided if he thought of something such as, oh I don't know, a policy of some description
Ed Miliband should be a warning for Starmer, though. He allowed his image to become too cultivated and it hurt him. He's far more relatable and likeable now that everything's not run past a PR firm first. Oh for Chaos With Ed Miliband now...
That's right, because the police are the only people lie about what happened at the demos, right? Oh no wait, there's "eye witnesses" aren't there? And they're all completely independent (providing they say the right thing).
