It's for similar reasons people actually listen to that failed gameshow contestant who made a career out of being an ignorant ****, namely "They say what we're all thinking" - because apparently somebody playing to one person's prejudices means that they're playing to everyone's prejudices...

  8. Trump's new Temporary Attorney General Whittaker, whose public pronouncements threaten the future of the Mueller enquiry, is now linked to an FBI investigation into a company that scammed customers for $26m. And email evidence suggests that he actually threatened a complaining victim!
Sounds like a perfect candidate for this White House!!!

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/nov/09/white-women-vote-republican-why

Because the obvious alternative is people who think like you do, if think is not too strong a word.

A brief survey of the salient choices for American voters:

    Republicans:

****can the rule of law, the Bill of Rights and reason in general because they're part of a vast conspiracy against us.
Get the economy to work better for the Trump family.
Hide our heads in the sand and pretend we aren't fighting multiple lost wars.

    Mainstream Democrats:

****can the rule of law, the Bill of Rights and reason in general in a wimpier way.
Get the economy to work better for the Trump family in a wimpier way.
Hide our heads in the sand and pretend we aren't fighting multiple lost wars in a wimpier way.

    Activist Democrats:

****can the rule of law, the Bill of Rights and reason in general because they're part of a vast conspiracy against us.
Get the economy to work better for middle and upper middle class white women.
Hide our heads in the sand and pretend we aren't fighting multiple lost wars because Islam oppresses women.

Sanders may also deserve a mention:

Uphold and improve the rule of law and the enforcement of the Bill of Rights and the use of reason in general, for the most part.
Get the economy to work better for most people.
Hide our heads in the sand and pretend we aren't fighting multiple lost wars.

Here's the thing I don't get about the Democrats: you would think we'd already be hearing people throwing their hat in the ring for the 2020 election, especially with the open goal in the Oval Office, but we haven't heard a peep from anyone. At best there's murmurs that Elizabeth Warren could stand, and it's long been assumed Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders will have a run, but the loudest noise at the moment is for the likes of (and I'm not joking) Oprah Winfrey and The Rock.

Part of it I can put down to the long history of front-runners failing to secure the nomination, for example Hillary was the assumed Democrat candidate for 2008 until Obama swept past her before obliterating her in the vote at the DNC, as well as assuming the Democrats don't want a repeat of the farce that led to the Republicans having twelve candidates during the primaries (in comparison the Democrats had just three during the primaries) but you'd think somebody would be creating their ticket by now

They don't want to give the Republican press time to create a load of conspiracy theories about them, which right-wing voters will take to heart.
They've already gone all-in on Ocasio-Cortez and she's only been on the scene for a few months.

I think its also fair to say that there isn't really a politician who can unite the Dems right now, their voters being a rough coalition encompassing voters from the centre-right to the far left. Uniting those who are only voting for 'anyone but Trump', with the hard line identity-politics led college graduates is nigh on impossible.

Then again the GOP is similarly hopeless, Trump got a lot of people mobilised and assuming he won't run in 2020 (which to be fair he might if he feasibly can) it is hard to see the anti-establishment, vast liberal conspiracy pizzagate voters lining up alongside the traditional lifetime GOP voters unless the Dems manage to field a candidate as singularly unlikable as Clinton again for them to unite around.

  15. And in news that will come as no surprise in this thread.......the Beeb don’t consider as newsworthy the POTUS staying in his hotel out of the rain, rather than attending a formal remembrance service - which he apparently had travelled 4000 miles for <doh>

Fortunately, it seems that most other national and international news agencies have taken a different view and the Grotesque Orange Fascist is getting a proper going over! <laugh>

The thing with that is that, using this Politico article, some of them they've had mud slung at them for the past two years, while others it;s clear to see what mud will be thrown at them

Elizabeth Warren - She's not Native American She's 1/1064th Native American (ignoring she could just as feasibly be 1/64th, obviously...)
Joe Biden - Tainted by association with Obama
    Bernie Sanders - He's old!!!!
Oprah Winfrey - She's black and she's a she, which is worth two nailbombs from the average Trumphadist
The Rock - His father was a black Canadian and his mother was of Samoan descent so birthers would have a field day on that alone
Michael Bloomberg - Speculation why he wavered to stand in 2008, 2012 and 2016 before dropping out every time
Joe Kennedy - The attack ads write themselves as it's too easy to say he got where he is due to his family (yup, that surname is no coincidence)
John Kerry - Lost to Dubyuh in 2004, so if the Democrats even considered him he'd be an easy target
Mark Cuban - Allegations of sexual assault
Howard Schultz - Starbucks. Need I say more?
Beto O'Rourke - Even though he's of Irish heritage his Hispanic nickname will be a stick to beat him with
Andrew Cuomo - Changing the Gubernatorial rules of New York about receiving donations to pocket $890k is an open goal
Cory Booker - Releasing e-mails about Brett Kavanaugh to the public broke Senate rules
Tulsi Gabbard - Born in American Samoa, so the birthers will leap onto that one

Most of that list I came up with off the top of my head, while the stuff on Bloomberg, Cuomo, Booker and Gabbard is easily accessed on their Wikipedia pages.
It wouldn't surprise me if several prospective candidates are tripping over one another to try and get Bernie Sanders to be their running mate for this exact reason

  19. Interestingly, even some Republican commentators are blogging and tweeting outrage at this latest disgrace. There are rumours - also based on his lacklustre meeting with Macron earlier - that he may not have been physically able. Is it too much to hope that he’s on the point of a terminal heart attack or his symbiot implant is rejecting the body and dissolving inside..... or similar <laugh>
