It's become a thing since the Brexit debate of 2015/16. The term has been emboldened by that result for the right wing even though the result was spread across the political spectrum. Mainly because the whole brexit issue came about purely from a battle within the Tory party, so they will own it and use the same approach towards every contentious batshit loony policy.
Clickbait from a Tory Standard columnist. Even the actual ES article paints a very different picture.
That's all fine and well but what happens when it's not just one thing but a whole raft of them. At what point does it just become voting for a name above the door for the sake of it, when each of the things Kier stands for (or doesn't stand for) don't actually mean Labour anymore? A point lost on Alistair (who btw I don't dislike) and something he never quite understood.
I'm no Starmer fan-boy - far from it - but regardless of his and the Party's present pronouncements on policy (and I disagree with many of them), my principal concern is that the Tory Press will be on full attack mode from here to the GE. AC is New Labour through and through, no secret there, but probably takes the view that any shade of red is the priority, hence the comment. I have no great belief that any new Gov will be able to fully undo the mess of the past 14 years, but hopeful that at least a Left / Centre Left Party will improve things.
I understand that but I think it's been overplayed and he's gone too far the other way. Just bcos Corbyn was an easy target doesn't mean Starmer had to be. Instead of worrying about becoming another Corbyn he should've focussed more on becoming more like Blair pre-election 1997. Complete conviction in what he wanted to do showing socialism and productivity can go hand in hand. Spelling out clearly and in some detail how Labour under his leadership will grow the economy and restore public services and do so with passion and belief. You have to inspire ppl ffs. His 5 point plan in transferring the fossil fuel industry to green industry 3/4 years ago had the makings of doing just that. Fck knows when that got binned but it was progressive and inspiring. The second thing he could've done in tandem with the above is to throw scraps to the likes of The Sun or Mail and got them on side. They know, like they did with Blair, that the Tories are finished and Labour are winning the next GE. He could've offered them sweeteners to have some access and the ear of the heirarchy of a future labour government much like Blair/Campbell did but in return they needed to come out in support of Labour. It may be shaking hands with the devil but it's a low price to pay to sell what you believe in to the masses. And far more pragmatic than selling out to avoid being caught out like cowards.
I agree with most of what you say, but the problem for him is that ANY cozying up to the Murdoch Press pre GE will - and in fact has already - result in the Corbynite wing tearing him a new arse, which will only divide the Party still further. And boy, it's far from 'united' as it is! The GE is at least 3, maybe 8 months away and those 20+ poll leads can vanish bloody quick. Starmer is walking on eggshells, some of which I think are self-inflicted and unnecessary, like the stance on Gaza, and he's just desperate not to feed the rabid hounds. I bloody hope he's right as the UK can ill afford another Tory Government
So it's official: you can go on TV and make up a disease and Ofcom are fine with that Utterly ****ing useless
According to Peter Hitchens, the Nazis were actually Left Wing, based on calling themselves 'National Socialists'. In other news, it transpires that bears only defaecate on the Savannah and the Pope is Jewish.
When I come to power, anyone who spouts that "Hitluh wuz left wing" bollocks will be given a choice: be fisted by a grizzly bear, or be fisted by a polar bear
